RetroArch updated to 1.7.4, many new features added

unnamed.png

Emulation juggernaut RetroArch has been updated to a new version; 1.7.4. This new update brings about a wealth of new features, such as Discord integration, which allows you to show your playing status with what emulator and game you've currently got open. A 64-bit Android version has also been added to the Google Play Store, offering support for Dolphin, and causing some of the cores to run faster and have better performance. Also improved upon was the desktop UI for the program for Linux and Windows. You can drag and drop games in order to create a custom playlist of roms, and for those that appreciate visual effects, boxart support has been added to the frontend. This can be set to automatically grab thumbnails that you can click to play your titles, if you prefer that as to a list of names.

More specific changes, such as being able to edit shader presets, and a feature for FreeSync/G-Sync users have also been implemented. With the latter, it can adapt to variable refresh rates supported by certain monitors. Lastly, there's a new cheat code search interface that overhauls the previous version and adds a more organized list to sort through.. You can check out the entire rundown of the update at Libretro's official site, below.

As I don't have any idea about it, I'll ask:

I have Retropie in a Raspberry Pi 3B+, it works with Retroarch. Do I have to/Can I update something now? How?

If you can't wait for the retropie devs to add it, it's usually by editing retroarch.sh in the retropie-setup folder and replacing the part where it says 1.7.3 with 1.7.4. Then you build from source from retropie-setup.
I tried now but I'm having crashes when it tries to build. I'll have to wait.

are you using the bios files for your emulators? I find it works much smoother with official bioses enabled, I play GBA and Sega Genesis games pretty well on my ps3.
Yep. I'm using everything that is necessary. My main issue isn't in the compatibility and game performance...It's with retroarch itself...When I enter into settings to make it more personal and fitted for my use, it always screws up and either freezes at a certain option or it resets itself...My controller settings always go back to default and there were some instances when my controller just wasn't working inside retroarch and I had to completely wipe it and reinstall fresh for it to work again...And the most annoying thing is that suddenly it started to freeze on every single game on every emulator/platform I tried it on, on startup. For at least 30-60 seconds...which is very annoying....
And another small thing that can get annoying really fast...is that on NES games, you need to manually change your region options or otherwise it lags beyond control or glitches insanely. It doesn't work if it's set to automatically do it...That was the default setting, but it's no use like that...
It's a shame, because this really is a great project...but runs very poorly...

Thinking about it there is only 1 feature I want, the ability to auto-update.
they always advice being in the last version, but you can't even tell if there is any update from the program itself and no way to update it, you have to go and install it again.

Yeah, I can't figure out how to use the new GUI, there's no option for it.
you switch to it with one of the F keys, can't remember which (and no, this isn't an analogy to say F U), I activated it by accident while using the dosbox core.

Hmm, okay, also, I can't get TG-CD games to load, I have the syscard3.PCE BIOS file, but Rondo of Blood just shows up blank, not sure why.

Love the Cheat Creating ability with this. Just wish VirtualBoy could get better on the 3DS/Vita Ports. Android Version works perfectly, and now I dont have to repeatedly have to find the VB Codes with GameGuardian.

The best part of the Update is the release of a 64 bit version for Android. Now we have better emulators and faster too, plus they can finally add the Gamecube core to android (Dolphin), while Dolphin is already in the play store, some people do like to keep all the emulators in a single Apk if possible (Drastic being one exception)

I'm on PC, not N3DS. I can't seem to get it to load, what's the name of the BIOS you use? Do I have to set something else up? I'll ask on the libretro forums.
syscard3.pce just like any other time. It has not changed in this version. I don't know the location where it goes on the pc version since I use mednafen-pce on my pi3b+.
