PSVR games won't be compatible with PSVR2 hardware

Sony's upcoming PSVR2 headset won't be compatible with games for the original PSVR. PlayStation's SVP of platform experience, Hideaki Nishino, appeared on the Official PlayStation Podcast this week to discuss PSVR2 and revealed the disappointing news (around the 29 minute mark). The original PSVR headset can be used on the PS5 with an adapter, which will be the only way PS4 VR games can be played on the new system. Of course, the old headset won't be compatible with PSVR2 games either.

Nishino claims that the reason the new headset isn't compatible with old games is that "developing games for PSVR2 requires a whole different approach than the original PSVR," due to a number of new hardware features, such as inside-out tracking and eye-tracking, 3D audio, a 4K HDR display, and a controller with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

No release date has been announced for the PSVR2, but it is expected to launch sometime next year.

On a technical level this makes sense. I think its very annoying but at the same time understandable.

That’s really unfortunate - I was planning to pack up my PSVR for a straight replacement. I understand why this is the case, there’s no camera or light tracking, but a compatibility layer could fix that fairly easily. Oh well.
Absolutely, I don’t see why you couldn’t use old move controllers with the new camera and new headset…. But what do I know…

AND they din't bother to develop a PSVR1 mode for the VR2.

Is a shame, really, considering PSVR1 is awful.

Now watch this claim be proved false by some person forcing whatever's incompatible work anyway.
Wouldn't be the first time something a scumpany claim is "impossible" be proven to be a lie.

I suppose it would be a lot like trying to replicate how a WiiMote works on a mouse - different device entirely, so some translation is required. It does have two wide angle lenses, so there’s a fair chance it was initially developed for that purpose, but Sony has a long history of leaving functionality created in development “there” without ever tapping into it. Think back to the PSVita’s mystery port, or the barely used PS1’s parallel port (were there even official accessories available for it? I wouldn’t know any off the top of my head). They just kinda leave stuff “there” while other teams work on their own stuff. Once it became apparent that light tracking will not be the way the new controllers function, the camera kinda got left by the wayside, relegated to streaming only. If I were to hazard a guess, that’s probably how things went down.

I don't get why anyone is surprised by this honestly . . .
We are talking about 2 completely different peripherals on 2 different generation of consoles lol
Although i am pretty hyped to see the impact the PSVR2 will have on the industry.
The Quest 2 was a major step forward and i expect this to be the next big step towards mass adoption.
Great games are already lined up and the tech used in the device is great!
Pretty much all the reviews i've seem confirms how impressive and good PSVR2 is.

"Sony hates him! with just one weird trick..."

Seriously, if it just got out that the java runtime of the PS4 and PS5 can run ps2 games, I'm betting my freshly sourced GameCube that there is a way to make the PSVR2 able to run PSVR games.
