Mario Kart Wii coming to the NVIDIA Shield in China, will have online multiplayer

Earlier this year, we saw the release of Super Mario Galaxy for the Nvidia Shield, at least for those in China. The official port boasted features like upscaled graphics and replaced higher resolution assets. Other Wii titles like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Punch Out were all announced for the platform in that region, as well. Then, during ChinaJoy 2018, Nvidia's booth was shown having a playable demo for Mario Kart Wii.

This will mark the first official release of the game in China, but perhaps a more interesting fact revealed was that this version of Mario Kart Wii will also support online multiplayer for up to 12 players. Of course, the Wii version had online multiplayer when it launched a decade ago, but since the Nintendo Wii's online services are shut down, you can no longer access the original servers on original hardware. Mario Kart Wii for NVIDIA Shield will also be rendered in full 1080p, and if you own it, and Super Mario Galaxy, you can unlock Rosalina instantly, much like you could in the original.

Instead of Rainbow Road, we'll see The Great Wall Road
Sounds like a fun setting to me. It worked in Crash Bandicoot 3 and I think the dragon one in Mario Kart 8 is inspired by The Great Wall and China in general (but that is just a theory of mine). Just for shortcuts they have to get creative, but I think Nintendo could work that out.

I personally take this news as a Wii/Gamecube virtual console beta testing for the Switch, this would be a part of Nintendo's strategy to move Wii owners who did not buy a Wii U over to the Switch (which is like everyone).

If this turns out to be true, it's be very impressive since Wii/Gaemcube games would not only be emulated but also properly upscaled to 1080P on the Switch's hardware.

The creator of CTGP, MrBean35000vr, the most popular and extensive Mario Kart wii mod said he will be buying a chinese shield in attempt to connect wiis to shield servers, and research into what's changed etc. He also said that he has a STRONG suspicion this is a sort of "test run" for switch wii re-releases (rii-releases if you will. No I will not apologize for that) due to similarities between switch and nvidia shield hardware. Source: twitch.tv/videos/292670066
