Mario Kart Wii coming to the NVIDIA Shield in China, will have online multiplayer

gboU5Rn.png

Earlier this year, we saw the release of Super Mario Galaxy for the Nvidia Shield, at least for those in China. The official port boasted features like upscaled graphics and replaced higher resolution assets. Other Wii titles like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Punch Out were all announced for the platform in that region, as well. Then, during ChinaJoy 2018, Nvidia's booth was shown having a playable demo for Mario Kart Wii.

This will mark the first official release of the game in China, but perhaps a more interesting fact revealed was that this version of Mario Kart Wii will also support online multiplayer for up to 12 players. Of course, the Wii version had online multiplayer when it launched a decade ago, but since the Nintendo Wii's online services are shut down, you can no longer access the original servers on original hardware. Mario Kart Wii for NVIDIA Shield will also be rendered in full 1080p, and if you own it, and Super Mario Galaxy, you can unlock Rosalina instantly, much like you could in the original.

I'd say it's more like saying the Wii Classic Controller is a good replacement for the SNES controller
The Wii classic controller and the SNES controller has the same basic setup in the arrangement of the four face buttons. The Wii Remote and Joycon have two completely different face button setups.

i wonder how much of a deal they gave Nintendo on those tegra chips to form this deal, must've been significant for Nintendo to loosen the reigns on their IP

Correct, but the Joycon have more buttons. You can easily use A as A, RT as B, LS as Stick, etc
Not relevant for MKWii, but since @LightyKD spoke about any Wii games I feel the need to point out (no pun intended) that he isn't wrong when it comes to games with pointer control. The NX way of doing it just isn't that great, okay but really not more :(

Not the same feeling. That's like saying that the SNES button configuration is a good replacement for the GameCube controller. It's not.
actually, I wouldn't mind at all for a Skyward Sword with joycon
plus, on wii, sometime, it was tricky to swing your sword in specific direction to hit an enemy defending itself...
I hope it willl be better with higher quality remote :)

There are games that have proven that pointer controls can work just as well as any other on the Switch, the Joycons' motion controls are actually incredibly competent. And if it ever desyncs, it could be handled just as easily (and arguably more streamlined) as it was in Skyward Sword or Wii Sports Resort, which used mostly the same technology but was aided by the IR sensor bar

And I bet Nintendo will be dicks and keep this region exclusive.
I think it's more a sort of partnership deal with nvidia: ninty can't produce gpu's on a needed scale but has a strong software lineup. Nvidia is known for their gpu's but their software department is pretty unknown (despite it having quite strong pc game ports). This is probably a manufactured deal to peak interest.

As to why it will probably remain region locked: because the rest of the world has played this game to death already years ago (or, like you, don't care for it to begin with).
Basically: the exclusivity is probably worth more to them then a worldwide release would gain them.

But you can't get around the desync problem without a sensorbar.
Only the left Joycon has a camera, correct? That means the left joycon has to act as the Wii Remote, which is pretty uncomfortable. No A and B button of the Wii remote, instead 4 buttons which are close to the tail of the left Joycon. Not ideal. The Wii remote should have had 4 buttons around the A button but even without them, the D-Pad can be easily reached (with the exception of Up on the D-Pad), i.e. 4 or 5 buttons on the Wii Remote are easily accessible (D-Pad Up and 1 and 2: not so much).

Isn't there a way to "extract" Nintendo's own emulator to play Wii games on Switch or Android?
That depends on if it's an actual emulator or a port. If it's like the Xperia Play's PS1 emulator then it could ve reverse engineered to inject games, but if it's an actual port this wouldn't be possible. The latter is the reason you couldn't play emulated PSP games on the Xperia Play, because the released PSP games like Loco Roco were actual ports.
