LFA - Most bang for your buck on hand held device

Hi -

Im looking for advice on a hand held device that gives the most bang for the buck. My kid (8 yo) broke had his 3rd 3ds broke, and I dont really want to buy another.

Is there a hand held device that would be a great replacement other than a 3DS? Anything that is hackable would be great, or an emu machine. Looking for recommendations.

if he managed to break his 3rd 3ds i don't think there's anything indestructible enough to be able to be given to him without also breaking, especially considering how fragile modern tech is

get him a psp 1000, those things are basically mortar shells, if he manages to break that then you should give him a lesson on taking care of his stuff
