Making A Solar-Powered DS Lite

It's the son of the Solar Wii! Or is it "sun" of the Solar Wii? Whatever. After putting together a mobile, solar-powered Wii recently at Toms Hardware Guide, we got a few comments and suggestions about creating a solar-powered DS Lite. As a result, we procured a DS Lite and began to mod once again. As was with the last solar power mod, this one was extremely easy and inexpensive to put together. In fact, it was even easier than the Wii project because we had a handy solar-powered cell phone charger sitting in the lab. And it was roughly the same size and dimensions as the DS Lite, luckily (135 x 80 x 10 mm).

That's effin' ugly!

Kinda cool, but super-ugly.

There are already DS Solar-powered chargers.

It'd be really nice though -- if DS Lite's shell would have solar-cells just beneath the glossy plastic. And expensive as hell too.

I think the price of that solar panel really discourages people from buying it at all.

But, as mentioned, placing solar panels under the ds shell would be awesome

But how efficient would it be?

Well, I've seen solar-powered DS rechargers for only about 40€, so I'll probably grab one when I go camping to mountains. If it won't work right, I can still sell it (for a lower price, naturally).

thats a rather useless mod, they have the solar chargers for around $35 plus there not as ugly and they wont make it look like the upper screen is gonna break.

A solar charger would be cool, but not to directly power the lite. Just use it to charge the battery.

Besides, the amount of sunlight required to properly power the DS with solar panels would make it hard to see the screens.

what i think should be done is since solar panels change light to heat to electricity, that there should be two little pads (or one big pad) on the bottom where your hands would go, and just skip a step in the conversions that solar panels use and convert the heat from your hands (body temp or higher) to power. May not be the most feasible thing, but would help the insane gamer who plays forever and has sweaty/hot hands like me

Solar panels don't generate their energy from the HEAT of the sun, but from the LIGHT of the sun. I had a little solar LCD handheld game years ago (a game & watch type of deal) that had a solar panel as its sole source of power and almost ANY light would make it work.....the sun, a match, a flashlight, overhead tungsten/fluorescent lights, etc. In fact, the only light that I ever found that didn't work was the light from a CRT TV. I don't know about LCD monitors because they didn't really exist back then. But I do know solar panels don't work from heat because if you cover the solar panel with your hand on a device that relies on a solar panel, it will quit on you.
