I don't really play PC games because I've never owned a PC capable of playing newer games, but my essentials include:

Caesar 3 [city builder]
Halo: Combat Evolved [FPS]
Mass Effect 1 [RPG]
Knights of the Old Republic 1 [RPG]

I have played these over and over, and even had fond memories of them!

It's in open beta right now and when it launches it will be free to play, played a few hours of it earlier and it's pretty damn awesome. Although I feel you will probably need to invest in it (either money-wise or time-wise) if you want to really compete with players who have the unlocks.
