Epic releases Unreal Engine 5

Epic Games first debuted its "next-generation" engine for video games two years ago, further teasing the new technology with tech demos, and now it's time for the newest Unreal Engine to release to the public. Unreal Engine 5 is now available to download, introducing the new technology for game developers. They also released a sample of their The Matrix Awakens tech demo and a multiplayer shooter game called Lyra for creators to learn and understand how Unreal Engine 5 works in a "hands-on way".

With this release, we aim to empower both large and small teams to really push the boundaries of what’s possible, visually and interactively. UE5 will enable you to realize next-generation real-time 3D content and experiences with greater freedom, fidelity, and flexibility than ever before.

Currently, Fortnite is utilizing Unreal Engine 5, while CD Projekt Red has announced that the next The Witcher game will be made using UE5, and a new Tomb Raider game will also be built using it. The new features of this engine include Lumen, a dynamic global illumination technology that works in real-time, and Nanite, which can handle high-fidelity geometric detail. There are also new animation, shadow mapping, and audio tools, explained further in-depth in the official release notes

So now devs will start using/working with it asap for their games, or will there be a gap of figuring it out how it works? I know the next Witcher game is already utilizing UE5, but they gotta be familiar with it for at least a few months, not sure if it's same for other devs, or if they needed to put a request beforehand so they can receive a copy & start using it..

I also hope some of the "issues " that were present in the Matrix demo are fixed, regarding AI, graphics glitches, assets taking time to load thus looking blurry etc..

Epic must've shelled out some cash to hype this release; I swear I've never seen anyone that's not a dev care for an engine revision, yet UE5 has been getting coverage by most gaming sites ever since it was announced for some reason. Like, most people don't even know the engine that's used on their favorite games... Almost as if the game, and not the tech behind it, is the only thing that matters.

I've actually noticed a shift in reporting lately. I think Remedy Entertainment catalyzed this fascination with the tech the reporters seem to have now, what with their Northlight storytelling technology with almost fully destructable environments.

In other words, the big engine people saw Control win awards semi-recently and all said "Hey, we don't have a shiny new game. So let's spend money on advertising this engine we have."

And all of this fancy realistic looking graphics and models.

Games opt for the same old very basic symmetrical textured plastic models that dont look real, but enjoy xk resolution, hdr and Ray tracing.
