Bad news, folks: Apple stopped issuing SHSHs for 3.2.1 (for iPads), 4.0 (for iPod touch 3G), and 4.0.1 (iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4).

On the bright side, Apple is still signing iOS 4.0 for iPod touch 2G and 4.0.1 for iPhone 3G.

Anyone know how to upgrade from an iPhone 3GS on 3.1 firmware to 4.0.1?

When I SHIFT+CLICK restore, then browse to the 4.0.1 ISPW file, it verifies with Apple then says my device is not eligible for the upgrade.

The phone has never been jailbroken.

I thought this error was only for those trying to downgrade.
I read your post, Dialexio, but doesn't that just affect downgrading?

Jailbreak your device, back up your shsh, and then try to upgrade. Apple not signing means that you cannot get that firmware with Apple's consent since it is jailbreakable. Through Sauriks server you should be able to get that firmware.

If Apple is not signing for the firmware, you cannot restore to it (upgrade, downgrade, or reset to default settings). I'm sorry for the confusion, and will address this now.

Unfortunately, if you don't have the SHSHs backed up (via Cydia servers or Umbrella), this means you cannot use iOS 4.0 or 4.0.1. You can only use iOS 4.0.2, which does not have a jailbreak.

^the last three posts: when you backup your shsh for your firmware, you can downgrade back to that firmware and all the ones that come after. That's why in Cydia you get something like this: "This device has shsh backed up for firmware 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.1, etc".
So if Devante jailbreaks his device with Spirit and backs up his shsh, shouldn't he be able to go to any firmware above 3.1, including 4.0.1?

Not necessarily. Many had their SHSHs backed up for iOS 3.0 on Cydia's server, but Saurik was only able to back up a small number of SHSHs for 3.0.1 prior to the release of iOS 3.1.

Not quite. If he Spirit Jailbreaks he then has the 3.1 shsh backed up. He still can't restore to 4.0.1 as he doesn't have shsh files for that firmware.

I want to jailbreak my iPod Touch. I remember reading something about a jailbreak where you would have to connect your device to a computer every time you rebooted it. I think it was called a tethered jailbreak. Do I have to worry about this with any of the guides in the first post of this thread?

You can now have an full, untethered Jailbreak on any device running 4.0.1 or below using Comex's Star Jailbreak (or jailbreakme.com)
So those other methods would result in a tethered jailbreak?

Actually I did get to 4.0 using blackra1n and snowbreeze and itunes 9.2. Just blackra1n, then sn0wbreeze, then restored sn0wbreeze's custom firmware in iTunes and viola, I have a jailbroken 4.0 phone.

However now it seems a little quirky.
So far it says I have no service on my sim card, but my old iPhone with 3.1.2 does.
And [Redacted] can't actually seem to download anything without connection errors or unexpected content. Hmmmm..

Nevermind about [Redacted], seems to work, you just have to try a few times.

Every modern jailbreaking method is untethered nowadays.

Most of the methods mentioned in this guide are untethered; only select methods (redsn0w and sn0wbreeze) are tethered for newer models ("MC model" iPod touch 2G, iPhone 3GS with new bootrom, iPod touch 3G).

If your phone was unlocked before, you'll need to unlock it again, but with ultrasn0w. ultrasn0w will unlock the baseband found with iOS 4.0.

[Redacted] gets connection errors when the websites that host the api's are crowded. If you try later, when they aren't so crowded, you might be able to get it. The unexpected content errors mean that what your trying to download is a bad api.

JamstruthNot quite. If he Spirit Jailbreaks he then has the 3.1 shsh backed up. He still can't restore to 4.0.1 as he doesn't have shsh files for that firmware.
Here is a screenshot of my iPad:
IMG_0066.PNG
I'm on 3.2.1, and I have shsh backed up for 3.2.2 and I had them when I was still on 3.2. When 4.0 comes out for iPad, i will have the current list + whatever firmware come out by then + 4.0. Cydia stores shsh for all the firmwares available ever since you jailbroke. So theoretically, if I get 4.0 on my iPad and decide to downgrade to 3.2.1, it is possible since I have shsh backed up for that firmware. So that means that you can do the same thing but by upgrading. (ex: 3.2 to 3.2.1)

Sure enough, ultrasn0w fixed it. Now my carrier works.

Weird thyough, I don't think the phone was ever unlocked and my sim card is AT&T so I thought it should just pop in and work regardless of unlock status.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes you can. What you said is absolutely correct. However in devante's case he had never jailbroken before, so his SHSH files have never been backed up. If he jailbreaks at that moment, the only SHSH file he will be able to back up is 4.0.2, because thats the only SHSH apple are giving at the moment (they stopped the signitures for earlier firmwares)

Well, surely ultrasn0w is needed fo the unlock, but since you have AT&T sim, I'm confused on why you needed that.
oh well doesnt matter, it works!

I've got an Australian iPad 3G, after using MyWi 4.0 on it, it says I'm not subscribed to a cellular data network. I restore and updated to 4.0, but still not fixed... Any idea...?

I'm not familiar with the problem; I have no problems using iOS 3.2.1 and MyWi 4.0.

The best I could suggest is looking over the APN settings to make sure they're correct. If you haven't signed up for a cellular data plan, you'll need to; the iPad 3G's pricetag doesn't cover the cellular data plan.

I think I broke my brother's iPod 2G (no MC model), but I'm not sure.

He was on firmware 2.2, and I tried updating to 4.0 (through Shift+click Restore), but it said the device couldn't be updated and gave error code 13; looking up the error code gave me no results.

Now, he's stuck with an iPod that only shows a screen with the iPod cable and the iTunes logo, and he can't use it anymore.

Plugging it in iTunes again tells us that the device is in restore mode, but I wouldn't know how to restore as it didn't work when I tried to 'restore' to 4.0.

Any help?

EDIT: I tried restoring (through Shift+click again) with the 3.1.2 firmware, but again, it gave the same error.

EDIT2: I'm doing a regular restore right now (it's downloading firmware 3.1.3), I'll see if that works.

EDIT3: "The iPod can't be restored".

How the hell do I get this to work again?

EDIT4: I think (hope?) updating iTunes to version 9.2 did the trick, as I'm installing firmware 4.0 now.
