It’s time tempers… to review the latest entry in the Yu-Gi-Oh video game series! Did you expect a different kind of intro? I know what you were thinking... and I don’t go for the cliché’s.

Yu-

I’d like to start by talking about the biggest selling point of this Yu-Gi-Oh game. The campaign mode is just awesome. Legacy of the duelist is exactly what the title implies. A legacy. The legacy of every Yu-Gi-Oh protagonist, all handed to you in one cheap package. You can take on the role of Yugi Moto, Jaden Yuki, Yusei Fudo, and all the future protagonists of the franchise.

The stories parallel the anime/manga adaptions of each respective story, allowing you to play through the duelist kingdom and domino city in the original Yu-Gi-Oh, to taking on Yubel and the sinister Evil Hero cards in the GX storyline.

All duels allow you to play either with the respective protagonist/antagonist characters deck, or allow you to take on the story line with your own structured deck as well! (For all you little crazies that want to break canon and bring synchro summons into the original Yu-Gi-Oh.)

Gi-

As far as gameplay goes, it all stays true to the original games. All the rules of Yu-Gi-Oh are followed, and it all flows smoothly. It actually feels much quicker than previous entries, with AI reaction being much more on the spot than in previous games. Frankly, this was a relief, as past entries were guilty of AI taking minutes just to complete a turn.

Victories will award you battle points, which can be spent on new packs in the card shop, as well as signature cards, avatar unlocks, alternate duel stories (such as being able to play as Pegasus vs Yugi, instead of vice versa) and more.

Signature cards are rewarded cards that you can add to your own extra deck. They tend to be famous cards from key characters in the story, such as Kaiba’s precious Blue Eyes White Dragon.

There’s an enormous card set to choose from this time around, with over 6,600 cards available to create a multitude of deck opportunities!

Oh!

And in case you don’t feel like playing against the classic villains and their decks, the new sealed play mode allows you to purchase a set amount of card packs, and then create a deck from those booster packs to take on CPU’s. It’s a really cool way of teaching yourself to be more versatile with card sets, and is great for strategizing.

But of course, let’s not forget the real challenge and fun of this new Yu-Gi-Oh title, online play. Online has casual free play modes, as well as ranked battle, which allows you to keep track of some of the top duelers in the world. Online follows similar rulesets to the regular TCG tournament rules, so rest assured you won’t have to face trolls that have loaded up their decks with forbidden cards. That being said, there are also modes that allow you to check for forbidden cards to activate, so no need to worry about rules getting in the way of your fun in free play.

As far as other aspects of the game goes, the graphics aren’t anything special, and there isn’t any voice acting involved, which is kind of a letdown for all the story content. Either way, it shouldn’t be enough to upset any dedicated Yu-Gi-Oh fan in the long run.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Huge selection of cards
  • Great story elements that parallel the anime
  • Online play works great
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Visuals are very basic
  • No voice acting

Gameplay
The gameplay stays very true to the originals, and that's a good thing. Simply presented, highly effective.
9
Presentation
It's probably the best presentation of a Yu-Gi-Oh game I've played in awhile. All the campaigns wonderfully reflect the anime adaption and it's both nostalgic and nicely presented.
8
Lasting Appeal
The stories alone will eat up plenty of time, and if you're a dedicated fan of the franchise, online will have you locked in for days on end.

Overall

Legacy of the Duelist was a refreshing Yu-Gi-Oh experience. It's fun, it's addicting, and at the cheap price of $19.99, you'd be crazy not to pick it up. I'd highly recommend you get your game on, because it's time to D-D-D-D-DDDDD-DUEL! (I couldn't resist.)
two things i heard about this game for online RAGE QUITTERS and NO TAG DUELS also if they RAGE QUIT they don't lose points for ranked or anything. but who played ranked? LOL?

but good review for the game for YGO fans new or old. maybe i can learn about those stupid new monsters after XYZ

It's nice that they included all the series in one game but comparatively with previous entries asking for more than 20$ would be a scam since it falls flat in almost the same areas that Duel Carnival did.
There are no tag duels which absolutely sucks, No overworld to explore, afaik no customize able avatar and it's on a stationary device instead of handhelds, where such games imo. make more sense.
Also Konami's recent reputation doesn't really help me to change my mind on this game and pick it up anyway.

All what i ask from Konami with a Yugioh game is:
1. To look like Joey the Passion (and with the awesome reactions and voices)
2. Online play
3. Have old peeps and new peeps from the series
4. TO RELEASE IT ON PC!

On topic now, it a shame that they didn't add the loosing LP animations like the GX games had, it felt super nice looking at the opponent loosing LP and having like a loosing and winning poses in duels lol

I tried the last game on 360 and I don't know if it's just the fact that I don't know anything about the game other than the original series, or if the computer was a filthy cheater, but I couldn't beat the first battle. And then I see the following video and I'm like, yeah, that seems about right.

Warning: Language

My favorite ones are still the 3 PC titles from way back. It was fun to duel someone else in another room over LAN.

Bahahaha, I can't believe Michaels video made its way here. Loved that video.

That duel in general is just a total joke, because in the show, it's canon that the guy cheats by loading his deck with fake Exodia cards. While that was a really funny and coincidental loss, you can actually beat that guy incredibly easy. He has next to no other strategies, so just clearing his hand is enough to win easily.

Unfortunately it is not for any console I own. I wish it get a 3ds or ps3 port. Oh well, I will continue enjoying tag force special on my psp.

Damn, we need a decent YGO game for 3DS or Wii U.

It's not like it's so intense on graphics that it's impossible to work. I would play in a heart beat.

to use XYZ you must have the same level 2 or more depending on the monster's requirement say your summoning aRank 4 (it's call rank for XYZ) monster like #39 Utopia you need 2 level 4 monsters on your field and stack them ontop of eachother then the XYZ to activate a XYZ monster's effect(s) you need to send one of the monsters you stacked under it to the grave yard (intresting note on number cards in the TCG if a number card has no OLU's (OVERLAY UNITS) they cannot attack opponents directly only monsters

S
The last good one I played was WC2011
I hear the PSP ones were also good

Konami used to make great quality yugioh video games but this is basically that freeware game with less cards

i was talking about Pendulum cards.

A very fair review, looking forward to the future Arc-V DLC.

To answer a question above, pendulum summoning is the greatest !!

More or less, pendulum monsters are treated as a "monster" and a "spell" card.

These monsters have a "scale", which is the number/arrow on the side of the card, and when 2 are "set" on the field...allows you to special summon any monster from your hand and face-up from your extra deck.

* as long as the level is between the scales *

so if you have a scale of "1" and "9", you can special summon monsters that have a level of 2~8.

also pendulum monsters do not go to the grave, when destroyed, they instead go face-up on your extra deck.

This is such a late reply but I'm curious... Wouldn't you consider pendulum summoning OP? I haven't played since the GX additions but I'm looking to get back into the game. I don't want my deck to be completely wiped from the start due to pendulum summoning as my strategy is basically to burn their lifepoints down using card effects. How do you combat pendulum deck strategies?

It really sounds more op than it is. But really nowadays anything sounds op to somebody who quit at GX.

  1. Hardware

    Tribit StormBox Micro 2

Cramming a ton of features into a small package is a difficult feat on its own, but the Tribit StormBox Micro 2 manages all that and then some.

    Epomaker CoolKiller CK98 Keyboard

Did Epomaker learn its lessons from the last RGB-ified outing, with the new CoolKiller keyboard?

    Dredge

Indie title Dredge sails you out on a fishing adventure; but what looks like a cosy trip in the open seas can turn into a fight for survival after dark. Will you conquer the seas?
  4. Computer

    ShowGunners

Turn-based is definitely not my go-to, but ShowGunners definitely piqued my interest so I had to give it a whirl!

    Case of the Golden Idol

Case of the Golden Idol was one of the most acclaimed games of 2022. With its first DLC releasing today, does it still live up to the hype?
