Review cover Retroflag Handheld Controller for Switch (Hardware)
Official GBAtemp Review

Product Information:

Retroflag are back doing what Nintendo won't with a lavishly-themed Switch controller grip.

Back when the Switch was originally announced, I had a vast assortment of miscellaneous excitements, each fuelled by the then-unique design. A dockable tablet with detachable controllers as a concept is phenomenal. You could have an entirely modular and upgradable platform between the dock, controllers, and tablet; the possibilities were endless for unique controllers, and docks that could provide power boosts when playing on the TV. In the end, my excitements remained just that. Nintendo never really iterated on the Joy Cons, and the dock is still just a block of plastic that’ll output HDMI and little more. My dreams of unique Joy Cons to match the company’s greatest controllers are all but up in smokes, at least officially speaking. While Nintendo sticks to its guns and holds tightly to its original designs, third parties continue to develop and iterate, and now we’ve finally arrived at my dream design with Retroflag’s very non-specific Handheld Controller for Switch. I’m in love.

attachFull341041

Now there’s actually a good bit to break down here. On a surface level, we have a beautifully nostalgic translucent purple shell that’s designed to wrap around the Switch, interfacing with it via a USB C port at the bottom and being recognised as a wired Pro Controller. You have all the buttons you’d need for a Switch controller to work, with both sticks clicking in for a third input, and one additional button available for some nifty features we’ll go over later. Looking at the dimensions it’s 273mm wide and 110 tall, which is relatively comparable to Hori’s popular Split Pad Pro, if not a good bit sleeker in design. It’s got a really premium finish and holds both the standard and OLED Switch tablet well thanks to it overlapping the frame of the console on the left and right, as well as small clips on each side that catch the Joy Con rails.

To stop beating around the bush, what we have here is a controller grip that’s clearly inspired by the GameCube controller, and as I’ve commended Retroflag for in the past, they’ve done a brilliant job with the theming. Both analogue sticks feel great, and feature the growingly-popular magnetic hall effect sensors to avoid the drifting that’s plagued the vanilla Joy Cons. The D-Pad feels really nice, and definitely feels larger than the original GameCube controller’s. Each button feels great to press, with the plus and minus buttons, as well as the home, screenshot, and extra button being clicky; your usual face buttons by contrast have a satisfying travel distance to them. There have been some liberties taken to modernise the layout and bring it in line with what Switch games are expecting you to use, adopting the diamond-shaped ABXY over the GameCube controller’s own style. On top of this, we get a set of shoulder buttons and a set of digital triggers. I’m a little sad they didn’t jerry-rig something together to make the Switch think this is an actual GameCube controller so they could add analogue shoulder buttons, but I can imagine that’d add a number of restrictions that wouldn’t make sense given it’s only really Super Mario Sunshine that’d actually recognise them.

While I am on board with the modern take on the GameCube controller’s design, there are a few things I’m disappointed to see from this transition. Perhaps the most obvious of these for the eagle-eyed GameCube enthusiast is the lack of notches in the plastic surrounding each of the analogue sticks. It’s hard to really say whether this is a negative, since Switch games are probably expecting you to have full motion on both of your analogue sticks in oppose to being limited to an odd octagon. Even thinking like that though, I do think it’s a missed opportunity. Both analogue sticks just feel too close to the original, with this missing piece adding an initially-foreign sensation to the mix. Though an even more minor criticism than the lack of notches, the matte finish on the face buttons didn’t quite sit right with me at first, with the GameCube controller buttons being glossy. I will say that after using this controller for a week or so now, I’ve come on board to both of these discrepancies from the source material, and I do understand it can’t be exactly the same. With how close it is though, you’re overtly aware of anything that’s even slightly off.

I have been mentioning a special button, and it adds my favourite feature of third party controllers: rapid fire. If you hold the special button down and press any other button, the button will then have the hold mode rapid fire enabled. This means that if you hold the button down, it’ll act as though you’re mashing it. To give you an idea of how fast the mashing is, I decided to boot up Mario Party Superstars and start a game of Mecha Marathon. The aim here is to mash A and B as much as possible in 10 seconds. I managed to max out my score at 70m, so it seems plenty capable. On top of the hold mode, there is also a toggle mode that you can turn on by holding the special button and double tapping the button you want to enable it for. This will enable rapid fire regardless of whether you’re actually holding the button, and can be toggled on and off easily by just pressing the button.

The special button also has an additional feature in enabling you to remap buttons on the fly. The idea of this is a good one, but it is ultimately a useless feature for a reason I never expected: the controller is detected as an official Pro Controller by the Switch. What does this mean for button remapping? It means you can do it using the Switch OS itself, instead of having to rely on weird on-controller button combinations. On top of this, the controller even features motion control, though your use for this will likely be limited for handheld play. While the controller itself is perfectly comfortable, it doesn’t make for the best experience when playing a game like Splatoon 3 that expects you to be rotating the controller to aim efficiently. The one feature it's missing versus an official Pro Controller is NFC support, but I don't believe this is even possible to include with a wired controller, with even official Pro Controllers not allowing NFC usage with wired input enabled.

You do also get some rumble features here, with the controller vibrating to indicate when turbo functionality is turned on or off. It does also naturally work as you'd expect with Switch games. The one I looked at in particular was Splatoon 3, knowing it has a good variance in rumble strength between actions like swimming in ink and launching missiles. Though it can feel a little weak for the most subtle vibrations, it is noticeable and does enhance the larger experience. It has some of the subtlety you'd expect from HD rumble, even if it does fall slightly short on the strength.

Though the controller takes up the Switch’s USB C port, there is a USB C port on the bottom of the grip itself, allowing the Switch to be charged while you play. The only reason you’d need to take it out of the grip is if you wanted to dock it, since the additional bulk and slightly-repositioned USB C port would get in the way.

All in all Retroflag’s Handheld Controller for Switch is a hit with me. It looks great, feels great, and has all the features you’d realistically want from a Switch controller. With the only feature it’s missing being NFC support, I can highly recommend picking this up if you happen to see it in stock. At $70 you’re looking at a premium price, but I truly do believe this is a premium product to live up to that.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Fantastic theming
  • Comfortable handheld grip
  • Hall effect sensors
  • Rapid fire button
  • Motion controls and rumble
  • Detected as official Switch Pro controller
What We Didn't Like ...
  • No notches on analogue sticks
  • Face buttons' matte finish feels odd at first
  • No NFC
9
out of 10

Overall

This grip has single-handedly replaced my Joy Cons for handheld play. With a great design, great feature set, and great feel, it's a standout controller that I can't help but recommend.
At $70 you’re looking at a premium price ...

Nothing wrong with that price if the product merits it. Besides, when you look at what $70 will get you at the grocery store right now, seems like a pretty good value for this controller/grip.

I searched for the word "gyro" and it didn't come up. Does this have gyro support? The reviews on Youtube didn't seem to say either.

VERY IMPORTANT!

EDIT: I see it now under "Motion Control"

So it keeps the worst parts of the GameCube controller design like not having a full top on the right "c" stick. While dropping is greatest feature in the unique shapes and layout of the ABXY buttons. Hard pass, they missed the point entirely on why we love the GameCube controllers, it's not just the color scheme.

They could have gone the extra mile by adding a toggle to make if be recognized as a Gamecube controller.

There's a few games that fully use the Gamecube controller, analog triggers included, that would benefit a lot from this, and since it's USB-C and it feeds all three USB ports in the dock, there shouldn't be any issues with powering the rumble motors.

Personally, i would buy this if it allowed me to play Grid Autosport in portable mode with Analog triggers.

Also, i think they wasted the chance to add the iconic Gamecube button layout. If they're going to make Gamecube thematic joycons they should commit to them.

The Wii U had a third party controller (Gioteck) with analog triggers, and I thought it could have worked with Most Wanted (still the best console port), but no it was recognized as digital triggers.

So even if this Switch handheld controller did feature analog triggers it's not guaranteed it'd actually work since games were made to function with digital triggers.

Looks like a standard controller grip with a Gamecube color theme. The only standouts are the analog sticks being with the right stick being mildly uncomfortable and the hall effect sensors... A bit high on the rating... It'd be infinitely better if there was a proper gamecube layout.

no notches, buttons just normal like alway, there was literally no reason to make the right stick look like that, its the only part of the gamecube controller thats actually a downgrade when compared to any other pad on the market and thats the part they chose to take over.

Wii U doesn't work the same than Switch when it comes to other Controllers. For starters, a GC controller through the oficial adapter work the same as a Procon system wide, but also developers have complete freedom to make their games fully compatible (that is, button prompts, rumble and analog triggered) unlike on Wii U

Regarding using it in handheld mode, the Switch in handheld mode picks the same peripherals through USB as It does docked, wich includes GC Controllers through the GC adapter.

So there's no reason why a hardware vendor can't create a USB grip/Joycon with analog triggered that can be spoofed as a GC controller by using a toggle.

I don't. I hate it.

why can't custom joycon makers implement NFC, HD Rumble and turn On at a distance ??

Added price + uselessness of these features overall, other than remote power on.

IMHO, Hori Split Pad (the new slim version) >> Hori Split Pad Pro >>>>> this and all alternatives.

It is an interesting mix of gamecube and switch layout. I'm assuming they tested it and found it made the most sense with the switch library. But it does feel more like a compromise between both rather than best of both worlds. I personally wouldn't mind this one with a normal c/right stick, and then a different version with the button layout and notches of the gamecube.

I can't think of a game that'd be hurt by notches, though....

Usefulness of those features is in the eye of the beholder. If you don't like the tactile feedback of the rumble and don't use gyro or amiibos, that's on you.

For me, the lack of those features is a deal breaker and why i'm ignoring Hori overall on the Switch.

"The D-Pad feels really nice" hooray, finally a modern D-Pad that's actually a D-Pad instead of just a Hat Switch (I'd been sticking with direct Joycons for the NSO games on the grounds that they need an actual D-Pad and the procons have those stupid mushy hat switches).

Indeed, but just like it's useless to me, it's useless to their target audience.
Enjoy your features on controllers that feature them, I'll enjoy mine for the lack of those.

IMHO, Hori should also make options with those features if they wanted more $.
I know I would make them if I was heading those companies.

I think it's the best and smartest no oficial controller addon it's been done since the begining. The Switch has this little blending "feeling" ( not just a feeling because it really blends where the joycons attach ), with this, you have the feeling of holding a solid 1 piece handheld, Switch little like.
I'd buy it but I can handle using the switch as it is

Indeed, but just like it's useless to me, it's useless to their target audience.
Wrong

For starters, the Nintendo audience has always been the most accepting with aditional feaures, to the point of asking for them in games (like, for example, gyro for Doom 2016 on Switch). That's not new, it's something that has been happening for decades.

Second, the gamecube controller had rumble, and a good one at that, so if the target audience are the Gamecube nostalgics, this needs to have, at the very least, rumble.

Third, if this had the gamecube nostalgics in mind for real - instead of being just a quirky retro themed joycon alternative for the Switch - it would undoubtedly feature the GC button layout (wich, by the way, was part of those new features the Nintendo audicence is very accepting with)

It does have rumble, that's my bad. I did say that the only feature it was missing is NFC (likely not a possibility given it's acting as a wired pro controller, and even official ones don't support it wired) but I never explicitly talked about rumble.

I'll add an additional paragraph for it later today. If I'm being perfectly honest, it's something I overlooked due to rumble being disabled on my Switch. This in turn was due to using a Titan Two, and the fact that using an official Pro Controller through that makes the rumble feel like scraping rusty nails against a walk.

Tl;dr if you don't want to wait though, rumble is decent enough. Playing Splatoon 3 there's a good range, with swimming in the ink being slight and launching missiles hitting harder. It's good enough to the point where you'll notice it in the games that use it, and that it'll meaningfully add to the experience.

Someone call me back when revision B is released with the GameCube layout for the face buttons....

Is this available to buy in the UK/Europe?

coincidentally, amazon showed me this yesterday, really thinking hard about it
no rumble or nfc though, but usable as two joycons, and both have a microusb for charging

one reviewer says, it feels cheap and he sees leds through the palstic on the inside :(

What do you mean no rumble or NFC?
I have 5 pairs of these Joycons and every one of them have rumble and NFC. Unless something changes in the new batches. I'll check my yellow set. I just grabbed those back in October. They definitely have rumble but I haven't tried NFC yet.

EDIT: Just finished goofing around in Mario Odyssey and my newest set has both rumble and NFC. BTW my set was below 30 after taxes on Ali Express. Sure you may have to wait a week or two but it beats the crazy prices on Amazon. Lately, Ive seen the GameCube Joycons go back up to the 45-60 range over at Amazon.

I meant Hori's target audience, not Retroflag's.

The pad featured in the article is clearly lacking features.

i am not sure what you see at the emebedded pic or mean with "yellow", but it should be a gamecube styled joycon pair from alabastia.
and buyers at amazon have confirmed they do not have NFC and rumble.

Your embedded pic shows a purple set from Amazon. I was stating that my newest set of GameCube Joycons are yellow and they have all features (minus the IR pointer). If the Amazon Joycons don't have rumble and NFC then you should buy a set from AliExpress. At least that way you get everything except IR

i never thought of a gamecube style joycon in yellow, thanks for linking
the gamecube form factor, but in switch colors (red and blue) also look wrong at first glance :)

but they have nfc and rumble and are also chargeble via usb
and are a lot cheaper!

They can also be charged via the console. I never use the included USB cable 🤣. As for my color choice. I have a whole Pikachu theme going with my Switch.

Some of these style 3rd party Joy Cons do have NFC and rumble. Now, personally I wouldn't touch these because I have had a similar of these 3rd party curved joycons and they didn't sit right on the Switch. Might've been defective, but definitely can't count on quality. The motion controls also weren't great except for Warframe and Fortnite which have amazing gyro aiming. BOTW hated the controllers, and the sticks weren't very accurate.

Wow, you had a really bad set. Of the six pairs I've only had two with a busted battery. I think I'm going nearly 4 years with most of the joy cons and so far they have held up.

It looks nice but I think for that cost we should have rumble.
Also a kick stand since it blocks the built in one.
Personally I'd want it in forest green too.

It looks really nice, if I used my switch in handheld more I might get this, but it lives in its dock permanently. I don't mind that it doesn't have the octagon shaped analog stick slots, it's not as true to the Gamecube, but I'd rather have it be fully functional, even if it wouldn't affect too much.
