Since the first batch of orders came in, the Steam Deck has been a hit. Offering the handheld PC gaming dream for the price of a Switch, Valve did what no other company could and (eventually) delivered on an experience previously reserved for the big-budget enthusiasts able to throw money to the likes of GPD and AYA. With decks now in hand, the focus shifts to getting the experience possible, and a natural starting point is a dock.

With the announcement of Steam Decks being readily available also came the release of Valve’s official docking station. Coming in at £80, it gives you three USB 3.1 ports, a gigabit ethernet port, and two outputs in a HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 port. It’s got everything you’d need, but to Valve’s credit, it isn’t your only option. The Steam Deck plays nicely with third party docks, with the company going so far as to assure you of such on the official site. If you don’t need two outputs, or if you’re just wanting something a bit cheaper, there’s options out there, and one of those options is what I have with me today.

Ivoler is a brand I have never heard of, but I can say they got their dock right. In all honesty, there isn’t much to get wrong. Taking a number of design cues from the official product, you have a relatively familiar look that features a cradle for the console, with a non-detachable cable coming from the back of the dock to act as the point of connection to the Deck. You have much of the same offerings as the official dock, with three USBs, a gigabit ethernet port, and a HDMI 2.0 port. It should be noted the USB ports are USB 3.0, and not 3.1, which is a slight downgrade, but not a killer. The HDMI output is capable of 4K at 60Hz, but I’d be surprised if you were really wanting that kind of performance out of the Deck. It’s nice to have the option if you happen to be using it as a secondary PC and wanting to watch things in high quality though.

The choice of material for this specific variant is aluminium, and feels incredibly sturdy and really quite premium. Aesthetically it looks great on a desk, and even if you’re not always using the Deck docked, it’s great to have a place where the handheld can just sit on the desk without it being in the way. For this premium finish, you’re looking at paying £50, which is a fairly decent saving on the official product. If you’re looking for something more budget, ivoler also offer a plastic dock that lacks an ethernet port, and a HDMI 1.4 port (capable of 4K/30 at max) at a much more budget £30.

Functionally the dock does what it says on the tin. You pop your Steam Deck in place, plug it in, and then either leave it to charge or play away on an external monitor. It’s compact to the point where you can realistically include this in a portable setup if you want to play on a bigger screen on the go. I have a portable gaming monitor and this goes perfectly with it when I’m popping into my parents’ house. There’s very little to fault here, but I would have liked to see a detachable cable connecting to the Deck in oppose to the one that’s built into the dock. Having such an integral part being non-replaceable just seems like a waste when it could’ve been a smaller USB C to USB C.

At £50 I wouldn’t necessarily call this a budget pick, but it’s a nice middle ground between the official offering and ivoler’s cheaper variant. It’s a clean design that I’m happy to have sat on my desk, and if you’re in the market for a dock, I can tell you this one works great.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Does what it says on the tin
  • Well-build and premium-feeling
  • 3x USB 3.0 ports ample for both gaming and desktop usage
What We Didn't Like ...
  • USB C connector from the dock to the Deck is non-detachable
  • Only one output compared to official dock's two
8.8
out of 10

Overall

Ivoler puts forward a decent third party showing and does exactly what it sets out to. Though missing one port from the official flavour, as well as featuring slightly slower USB ports, the £30 saving and overall premium feel might be enough to tempt most away from Valve's £80 offering.
That cable at the top kind of looks ugly. :-/
It’s a bit of a necessary evil with the Steam Deck’s design. I did see a cool locking mechanism on Reddit a while back but I’m not sure how feasible that would be for mass production.

To me it’s just a shame this vital cable can’t be replaced should something go wrong. It feels perfectly sturdy but it’s basically the single point of failure I can see.

I do wish Valve had put a USB-C port on the bottom as well, but meh, I’m not going to lose sleep over it.
I picked up an Aukuoy one for £30 in the Prime Day sale, which does 4K/60, not that I’m likely to use 4K on the Steam Deck much, but y’know, always nice to have the option. It’s still currently on offer for £33 on Amazon and so far I’d definitely recommend it.

I did consider one of the aluminium options available, but at the end of the day, I see a tiny strip underneath the Deck when it’s on there, so what the hell, saved the money.

Nice review. I'm torn between this one and valve's official dock. My (now kind of old) pc has two screens, so i could make use of the display port output (that is: replace my pc)... But i only really use two screens for work, and 'just' having one screen output on the dock is sufficient for gaming (ey... The deck's screen can be a small Playlist output).

So basically, I'm worried that if i buy the official one, i'll barely ever use more than what the ivoler offers. Hmmm...

Oh, and one bit i don't understand in the review: how is the non detachable usb-cable a minus if valve's dock and jsaux have the exact same thing?
(or is it a minus in general?)

It's a negative as a whole. Just because everybody else has a flawed design, doesn't mean you should copy it. It's no worse than the others, but it had every bit of potential to be better y'know?

The Steam Deck Does Not Have A Port On The Bottom, So Props To Valve
What was the thought process there? I do agree that a cord coming out of the top so you can charge while you play and not have a cord awkwardly coming out of the bottom towards you is preferred, but for the sake of docking, a port on the bottom seems like a no-brainer. The Wii U GamePad was on to the right idea, a charging port on the top and a means to charge from the bottom. With these modern devices needing to also output video, a full port is definitely needed on the bottom compared to the Wii U GamePad, so I say these devices should have 2 ports, one on top, one on bottom, I'm sure that would add a little to the overall cost, but not much, and quality of life upgrade would be appreciated by all I'm sure.

It Is Made To Work With Any Docking System Without Any Hard Work Or Custom Hardware, That Was The Idea

Is the Valve dock still currently going to be the best option if I want Freesync (when updated), multiple display outputs (more because I don’t want to be unplugging from the rear of it all the time) and a second charger?

So that means in order for it to charge while in a dock, you need a silly extra cord coming out of the dock? Seems like a poor planning somewhere in there in my opinion. I guess it works, but it's not the prettiest looking of setups.

True. But you seem to be overlooking the benefit here: you can use the ivoler and similar decks for any modern laptop as well, and i presume also to do things like charge. your smartphone. Those are genuine benefits that imho ate better than your argument.

... Come to think of it: if the wiiu had a usb outlet at the top, I could've used that cradle right now to output my steam deck to the tv.

If the USB-C port was on the bottom of the Steam Deck, you could still do those things by using a USB-C extension cable and it wouldn’t be permanently attached, rendering the entire dock useless if the cable gets damaged. Obviously, nothing to do with using a proprietary charging system, but it’s a design they could have gone with to save the current complaints some people have with the port at the top.

I’m still hoping someone eventually makes a dock for the Deck with a detachable cable. I don’t foresee mine getting damaged, but y’know, accidents happen.

There’s pro’s and cons to everything.

This seems great. It mostly how the official dock should have been design. That said, I found a video on it and people in the comments said it block the intake of the fan. Wouldn't mind seeing a gbatemp review of this.

As for the USB port location, I think the best solution is to have one on the top and bottom.

The deck would be nicer with a second USB C port. Then I would worry less about wearing the port out slowly and I would be able to charge while using my USB C to HDMI adapter. With just 1 port we need a hub for wired accessories.
