Official GBAtemp Review

Product Information:

Displate is a company that has been producing metal art prints of the same name for five years already. The team has recently entered in a collaboration with Blizzard to adapt artworks from franchises like Hearthstone, World of Warcraft and Overwatch in the Displate medium. In this review, we'll be taking a look at their product as well as get to know a bit more about what this company does.

If you’re into video games, you might have most likely, like me, tried to express your appreciation for the medium in some form or another. Be it via your phone’s ringtone (mine was Final Fantasy VII’s victory fanfare for a considerable amount of time), your pen holder or your favorite t-shirt, there is a vast collection of gaming-related accessories out there for you to choose from to personalize your collection. New to the video game merch business is Displate with its metal prints of the same name, aimed to decorate your wall.

Your Space, Your Style

Founded in 2013, Displate specializes in creating exceptional metal posters and doubles as a platform gathering talented artists from all over the world. The Displate global commerce platform currently hosts 4100+ artists and 100 000+ original works of art serving 250k customers across 74 countries worldwide. The company even touts itself as the “perfect platform for promoting those unusually talented people and their original and outstanding works”.

Beyond being a run-of-the-mill for-profit business, Displate goes the extra mile to help reduce the ecological footprint. The company is involved in Central America and West & East Africa and for every Displate bought 10 trees are planted! Their aim is to help you personalize your space while having a positive impact on the environment, quite commendable, huh! In so doing, more than 5 million (and counting) trees have been planted! I found this approach quite interesting and decided to write a few words about it here even if it's not totally related to the review. We have but only one planet Earth after all! You can read more about Displate’s tree planting mission right here.

Displate, Gamified

While the company features game-y arts from its community of artists, it had yet to partner up with a video game company for official prints. That changed last month when Displate announced its exclusive agreement with Blizzard, bringing the gaming giant’s art to life via Displate’s defining metal prints. The company has reached out to GBAtemp shortly after to preview some of their exclusive prints. So let’s take a look at them!

At first sight, you can tell that each Displate is a premium-quality product with its high quality, handcrafted and sturdy 3mm thick steel frame adorned by high quality images.

(sorry not sorry, metric units trumps imperial ones)

To ease the fixing process, Displate thought of it all and included magnets with all of its prints that you can stick on any surface and then attach the print to. No need to hammer in nails on your wall and potentially damage the wall (or your finger for that matter)!

The gaming prints are only one of the many categories of artworks that Displate has in store. You’ll find those belonging to various categories like Anime, Movies, Cars, Music and Landscapes on the official website for you to choose from. For video gamers here, you’ll find arts from characters like Mario, Link and Geralt as well as some console prints, but keep in mind that they are original works of artists rather than official designs from their respective companies. The Mario and Noctis metal prints that Displate provided for the preview are excellent pieces even if they are not officially licensed by Nintendo and Square Enix respectively. Their website is chock-full of similar prints and more with different art styles. With its recent partnership with Blizzard, I believe that it is only a matter of time before Displate teams up with more video game companies to bring their arts in your home.

The only complaint that I have is the sticky magnets can be a pain to get off walls once applied to one. So choose wisely as to where you wish to hang your pretty prints! Additionally, the price tend to go up the larger the size of the frame and some artworks of the same size cost more than others.
