Phaedrus - The snake. Harmful mercy

He who brings help to the wicked, later regrets it.
A man picked up a snake frozen with cold and warmed it in his breast
mercifully, to his detriment, because the snake, when she recovered, immediately killed that man. Another snake asked her the reason for her evil deed, and she answered, "That no one may learn to do good to the wicked."

[Qui fert malis auxilium post tempus dolet.
Gelu rigentem quidam colubram sustulit
Sinuque fovit contra se ipse misericors;
Namque ut refecta est necuit hominem protinus.
Hanc alia cum rogaret causam facinoris,
Respondit: «Ne quis discat prodesse improbis».]

You know what I'm going to say to this one. Should I? You already know the reply…
No good deed goes unpunished.

It is not false in most cases. It is oversimplified. Really oversimplified
In reality, it is very rare, thank goodness, that a good deed is repaid with evil, punishment or ingratitude. In my life what I have given has almost always been repaid, or I have been given even more than I deserved. Italy is known for its hospitality, solidarity and good heart; it is not a prejudice; it is the truth. Am I being too optimistic?
Maybe, compared to Germany, I think my nation can be considered a paradise, from the point of view of human warmth and affection.😊

mercifully/misericors... I wonder if this is connected to Mercury? Mercury has the caduceus with two snakes. He is the god of traitors, thieves and deception. That might be the referance? Is there a connection between 'misericors' and Mercuy?

Misericors (mercy) comes from "miserere"(having mercy) and "cor"(heart).
Mercurius comes from "merx"(merchandise) and indicates the merchant.
So no connection, but it was an interesting hypothesis. 😉
Do you like Roman/Greek mythology?
