After you finished the first dungeon, where do you go? By dungeon I mean the one where you first get the boomerang and use it to defeat the boss of the dungeon

Go to the big temple thing on mercay island I believe... It's called temple of the ocean king.

is mercay island the island that you start on?

Yup, it's on the top-middle of the island. Be ready to remember it's location as you'll frequently return there.
