Zelda Dungeons of Infinity released as a roguelike take on A Link to the Past for PC

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a standout game in the Zelda franchise, and one that many hold dear. With a remarkably open design for its time, paired with a simple and intuitive control scheme, as well as fun and engaging dungeons, it's one of many SNES games that remain great to revisit even today.

Games like A Link to the Past have a colossal amount of replayability, furthered yet by the emergence of randomizers and ROM hacks to create unique experiences more than 30 years after the game's original release. Today we're not looking at a ROM hack though. Instead, we have an entirely unique fan game that captures the look and feel of A Link to the Past, and throws it into a new roguelike setting.

The Legend of Zelda: Dungeons of Infinity is the result of four years of development in Gamemaker Studio from its creator Justin Bohemier. The game makes use of a number of A Link to the Past's original assets to really capture the same aesthetic, with new features and assets added to support the new procedurally-generated dungeon crawling.

Your goal when playing is to work your way through an ever-changing dungeon, picking up and swapping out items as you go to best equip yourself against the enemies and bosses you find along the way. If you fall on your journey, it's right back to the start for you.

In the game's announcement post on Reddit, Justin states that the project might attract the ire of Nintendo and encourages users to grab the game while it's still available, making the download available via both the game's Discord server and torrent. Since launching earlier this month, Dungeons of Infinity has already seen a few updates, with more to hopefully come in the future. The game is entirely free to download and play.

Though only officially available on Windows, I can personally confirm that it runs fantastically on Android via Winlator. Paired with ES-DE's latest update, you can launch it directly from the frontend like any other emulated title.

If you're interested in following the project, you can find a link to the official Discord server below:

Wow! That's nice about Zelda Dungeons of Infinity! This game is more hard or hardcore level than normal SNES game from A Link to the Past. Look very different weird level designs are big surprise to us and everyone can play more hard levels than before. Can't believe that.

But one problems in this game did have indeed bugs cause some player stuck in levels, also missing items, crash, and few other problems. I see version 1.0.8 right now. I download it and keep it, not play game right now until I hold for new version to get updated like fixed bugs, crash, missing items, etc would be great. But one big problem is no save because of hard or hardcore game is short time. That's why.

Awesome! I love this game!

People ask me how I'm constantly at max (non-nitro user) Discord servers yet every thing requires one now to download anything or keep up with information and sometimes even in place of wikis... I hate it so much.

Interesting. I don't like the style of play described, but more zelda is a good thing. I'll probably play once to see what it's like, then never again. Zero progress on death makes me have zero motivation to play.
Ironically the exact opposite for me. I could never get into Roguelites with heavy cross-run progression, it always feels like I'm forced to lose many times before my character is actually capable of progressing and sucks me out of it. My favorites are the ones where the main content is mostly available from the get go.

Couldn't see a torrent link on the discord but here's a direct download link to the current latest version (1.0.8 from 15th September)
Thanks for posting the link here. It does however not work anymore.

I'd appreciate if someone creates an actual mirror link, joining a discord server just to get a link is stupid.

Thanks for pointing that, Captain Obvious. Are you always this nosy in grown folk conversations, and no, don't answer...

is why it matters

I'm sure you got to make yourself feel superior though so that's nice

ps: https://archive.org/details/zelda-dungeons-of-infinity-1.0.8

the 1.0.8 link being dead might indicate that a newer version (1.0.9?) was released though, so you would have to wait for someone to mirror that

Just got around to checking this game out. Looks legit. From my brief playthrough (13 mins), I consider this game very responsive and the buttons were configured w/ the SNES button layout by default which registered automatically on the XBox 360-styled controller I was using. Sucks that when you die, you have to start the whole game over again, however, I believe that's what makes the game truly more challenging. The hobbyist devs did a pretty good job w/ its polished presentation:

Unfortunately, I still haven't finished my playthrough of "A Link to the Past," the GBA version so once I finish that I won't feel as distracted to give my full undivided attention to this game.

Verison 1.0.9 is out right now on September 18, 2024! :yay:

1726639361368.png

New version released:

Version 1.0.9:

Bug Fixes:

-Fixed crash on Agahnim level where if you owned the pendant of direction and opened the map screen, it would crash.
-Fixed rare bug where if you were to open your inventory screen while Armos bosses were exploding and dying, it could sometimes glitch out causing the red one to appear earlier, and after they all died, the game wouldn't continue with the crystal, making you stuck.
-Fixed bug where if you were holding an item and grabbed the falling crystal after a boss fight, it would glitch out.
-Fixed glitch when taking an item into Agahnim's chamber and he did you-know-what, you wouldn't be able to run until you fell into a pit and spawned back.
-Shifted Agahnim's sequence a bit making it harder for him to warp into his own bombs. It's still possible to hit him 2 times by timing 2 throws properly, but more difficult now, which would be a bonus hit for the player.
-Fixed exploit with magic cape when owning the pendant of magic, you could keep generating magic while spamming the cape on and off.
-Other minor fixes

Changes:

-The Gem bag is now the Treasure bag and can hold your gems and kinstones together. There's now only 6 slots because of space restraints when the lvl 1 inv bonus slot will be added as a starting bonus item.
-Made the red Armos boss a little easier, his jump takes a few more frames to complete making it a bit easier to avoid.
-Updated most of the food sprites with touched up versions, which mostly looks identical, just better color selections and textures in some, art credit: Glasus

Didn't love that I had to join a Discord in order to download it, but the game is also up on Internet Archive now so that's cool. I've had a lot of fun with the few runs I've done, but I'm terrible at ALttP combat and the first boss on floor 3 feels WAAAAAAY overtuned, haven't been able to beat it once.

EDIT: I also appreciate that the game worked with my dualsense out of the box, that should be the bare minimum for pc games these days :P

There's some heated disagreement on how the final boss of this game was designed. I watched a streamer play it, and I agree the dev dropped the ball. The dev refuses to change it though. So just a warning to any who play this game, the final boss encounter is not the same as the entire game leading up to it.

After doing one run I can say it's pretty fun most of the time,
however I'd argue that dark rooms are a case of bad game design.
Some enemies have a little bit of indication where they are, but a lot of enemies don't.

Those rooms feel like bad underwater night levels in mario maker 2,
mindlessly slashing around so as not to run into an enemy isn't my idea of fun.

My screen brightness however is setup rather dimm,
maybe enemies are still faintly visible in dark rooms?
