Wonder how much is ASCII art and how much is CGI ASCII art. We have had several things do it for years, indeed remember crashing my browser about 2004 some time with an HTML colour capable one when trying to open an 80 meg HTML file it spat out. If you want some real fun see if you can find some older typewriter art as it is arguably the progenitor of it.
On games and ASCII then we probably should mention the old roguelikes, possibly dwarf fortress and quite a few DOS era ones used odd extended sets of whatever to do what they do.
With all that said I reckon ASCII art in games will be like the black and white film stuff is today where it is a statement or trying to evoke something.
