Nevertheless, it was educational in a way, as I have confirmed my original observation that the author lacks any trace of imagination. The whole problem with the series is that anyone could have come up with the same crap. If I ask ten people to write a book about magic for children, 9 would have the kids attending some magical boarding school and all of them would use magic as a way to make the protagonist escape a troublesome reality (go read 'Mathilda'). Despite that, very few of the spells listed actually do something that can not be achieved with modern technology (and the ones that do are non-canonical spells from the movies or video games based on the franchise). Create a stream of water? I can do that at any time, in any place, or at least I would if it wasn't for the Vice Squad. Magnify your voice? It's called a Microphone. Open a locked door? It's called a fucking key! I don't need a broomstick to fly, I just use my home made JetPack! In fact, I did write something very similar to Harry Potter years ago, when I had barely heard of Harry Potter and the first or second book was just released. It was a game project I was trying to get off the ground, which would have being a mix between Zelda, Harry potter and Lord Of The Rings. It could have being interpreted as a "Female Harry Potter" project. The parallels were enormous, up to the fact that the protagonist was an unhappy teenage orphan (Luna) that finds out she must save a distant magical world (Lucia) from a dark force called The Beast Of Landor ? (who would appear both as a terrifying beast the size of a mountain, and as a simple gentleman in a black tuxedo wearing a tophat) The heroine would use magical mythological beasts found in the land to aid her, travel through the land on a flying horse and aboard a magical train, etc. It had flying chariots pulled by winged horses, magical artifacts that grant the holder power, and even the notion of returning from this magical land to reality. (I had it written up as an analogy to Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia. The player would never know if the events realy happened or if it was just the imagination of a troubled young girl escaping reality in her mind) After hearing how Harry Potter was becoming a success and having abandoned the game project already, I decided to write a book from it, which I never finished. All I had to do to come up with the same shit JK Rowling had was just pounder on the words "Young" and "Magic". The result always fits a standard model or a wizardy story. What I did have that JK does not, was original use of magic. I can think of far better things to do in a world where "everything" is possible through the use of magic than her. Also, my heroine did not accept the existence of magic that easily, and constantly pondered whether what she witnessed was real before finally giving in at the end, the entire question was a n important element of the story. Aside from some conceptual scenes in 3DSMAX (A render and an AVI), a handful of models, a logo and about ten pages of handwritten text, I have nothing to show for it, which I regret infinitely. If health permits, I am definitely going to revive this project one day, and rest assured people will claim I ripped off Harry Potter (especially since a character (Luna [Lovegood]) has the same first name as my protagonist (Luna Smith) since HP5). The fact that my protagonist was named Luna was simply because of the pending notion that she was crazy (as in, Lunatic), another example of superficial gimmicks easily duplicated by evenly uninspired writers. At any rate, I voted for Arresto Momentum, since if you can stop time, you can pretty much do anything. Including releasing shit before others beat you to it.
