Gaming Xbox360 mod chips?

Just a few questions:

Why do you need a mod chip if you can flash the xbox360 drive without it?

What is the best mod chip?

i fully don't understand why people would use modchips, but i'm going to get the blaster 360 when i have the money. mainly so if i have to update, i dont have to dismantle the xbox again and it comes with a pretty light that makes the xbox look unique

other than that, it's not too different from a firmware flash.
