Both the Xbox One and the PS4 have broken Amazon pre-order records, marking a 4000% increase of hardware sales in comparison to this time last year.
Also, the Xbox One's pre-orders went out of stock on Amazon, which doesn't necessarily indicate higher pre-order rates than the PS4, but hardware volume could be less.

With a peak of Amazon receiving 2500 console pre-orders (in unison) every MINUTE, the statement by Microsoft spokespersons that this new generation will sell a billion consoles doesn't seem so far-fetched... but Nintendo occupying a large margin of those figures still does, at this point.
