I have a 2 year old 4GB XBox 360 Slim and would like to mod it so that I can play backups from an external HD.

Any suggestions/instructions on the best way to mod it? I won't be connecting to XBox Live.

Also - is there a list of specific harddrive(s) I would need to run backups?

Thanks.

Best is a RGH.
Wait for the CR4 to be released, it'll be the last and best chip that Team Xecuter will release.
It should be released this month.

Also, get a 1 or 2 TB 2.5 inch lappy drive.
Using everything internal is not only quicker, it also looks neater then a bulky external.
You can copy the games via USB drives or via FTP.

If you do not have the soldering just get a ODDE

ODDE's are pretty much only useful if one wants to connect to XBLive.

If they don't then there's only benefit in RGHing it.
Xbox 1 games, 360 games, Indie games, DLC, XBLA and ofcourse homebrew software.
Besides, if one doesn't care about Live, fitting all the games they want on an internal HDD is more efficient then storing it on an external.
Not to mention it also probably be cheaper as well.

That and, OP might have a Corona 360, one that needs a RGH to gets it drive key extracted.

I think they are about the same price roughyl, last I checked the Xkey was about $73 on modchipcentral.com.

CR4 seems like it will be about $40 but you also need the nand read/write board, cheap side $9 from china but expensive side $40 from TX.

and corrected above, OP will think he can play Bone games on his 360 lol

Thanks all. I'd rather not solder, but since I have a newer unit I think I'll go with RGH and wait for CR4 and pick up an internal drive as Dinoh suggested.

Will any 2.5 internal HD work?

Any 2.5 inch drive will work perfectly fine ;]

If you don't want to solder then you'll have to bring it to a modshop (modshops always charge more for ODDE's anyway)
Be sure to ask for your original NAND and CPU.

That is the one down side to RGH, its quite a bit more work.

ODDE has two steps - dump the key (which may need some extra work), install ODDE

the install is very simple, all just plugs in, placement can be a bitch but not too bad. on one of the two I did the fucking SATA plastic came right off the pins, luckily it slid back on carefully but man was I mad!

Newer Slims will require a RGH to obtain DVD keys from.
As well as they need the FCRT.bin and the CPU key in order to emulate the DVD drive.

Means you'll still have to go through the RGH process before getting the job done ;p
If one doesn't connect to live then why waste a good 360's opportunity to become a powerful machine?
