Gaming Xbox 360 Australian can they be modded

My son wants to get a xbox 360 and i was wondering how i can tell if it can be either soft modded or modded by chip?
Any assistance would be fantastic.

You can do it yourself,I haven't done it in ages so I can't recommend a good guide.
