CHEYENNE – Wyoming lawmakers have voted down legislation to deal with a doomsday scenario, including plans to buy an aircraft carrier and create a state currency.

According to the Star-Tribune in Casper, House Bill 85 was rejected 30-27 by the Wyoming House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The bill was originally created to form a state-run “government continuity task force,” to prepare Wyoming for potential disruptions in food and energy supplies after a complete breakdown of the federal government.

The bill gained national attention after its sponsor, Rep. David Miller, a Republican from Fremont County, pushed for plans for the state to implement its own military draft, standing army and purchase of an aircraft carrier.

Now, this is just strange. They are the smallest state, they only have 568,158 people (estimated).

Nobody knows when it'll happen, people have only guessed so far. What makes anyone think that the Mayans knew?

The plan itself is absurd enough, but an aircraft carrier? Where are they going to get the money for a carrier and its furnishings? What about the escorts, including cruisers and destroyers?
China doesn't even have a fully functioning one yet.

Not the Mayan stuff, though this is why.

The bill’s sponsor, state Rep. David Miller, R-Riverton, previously said he didn’t anticipate any major crises hitting America anytime soon. But with the national debt exceeding $15 trillion and protest movements growing around the country, Miller said Wyoming — which has a comparatively good economy and sound state finances — needs to make sure it’s protected should any unexpected emergency hit the U.S.

Because the Mayan calander stops at that time. Or that was the story I heard about it :P

Well considering the Mayans aren't around today, it's pretty safe to say they were a little busy getting wiped off the face of the planet, to keep up the calendar.

and this bill kind of seems like a big "fuck you" to the rest of the US. In a "yeah we're pretty confident shit will be going downhill, time to raise a military, form our own currency, and stockpile all our stuff" kind of way.

How did even plan to get this aircraft carrier to Wyoming in the first place? There is a reason they spend all of their time in the ocean. I don't know what's worse, the sheer absurdity or the fact that 27 people voted for it.

While I can understand that cities need to be prepared for certain disasters or unforseen events and need to have evac plans in case of tornados, floods, fires, earthquakes, wars, chemical attacks etc. (cross out those that have zero chances of occouring in a given region, of course) but... overkill is overkill. :P

Why does this sound like Jericho to me?

For those who have never seen the show, basically there's nuclear bombs that pretty much hit everywhere in the US, and a new government is formed in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
