The phrases may have been, but I don't think people went around saying "W-T-F"Except the phrases "what the fuck" and "for the win" were used, and popular, before their prevalence on the internet.

The phrase is being used for pretty much the same meaning in both your examples. Not to mention that the term "for the win" doesn't quite have the same meaning in reality. "And he shoots the ball into the hoop for the win!" as opposed to the internet version: "OMG this game is so cool! THIS GAME FTW!".

In the latter example, whatever the phrase is being directed at is winning at being cool, obviously. Not to mention that the term "for the win" doesn't quite have the same meaning in reality. "And he shoots the ball into the hoop for the win!" as opposed to the internet version: "OMG this game is so cool! THIS GAME FTW!". You see the difference is that in the real life situation there is actually something to be won. Whereas the internet version is just some odd term that essentially means "I like this!" (to whatever the FTW was directed at).
I had to search deep on the Web to find out WTF FTW was suppose to mean.
Really, I'm not much into this Internet lingo yet.
Still it sounds cool one you know that all this letters mean, like hrth!
