Except the phrases "what the fuck" and "for the win" were used, and popular, before their prevalence on the internet.

The phrases may have been, but I don't think people went around saying "W-T-F"

Not to mention that the term "for the win" doesn't quite have the same meaning in reality. "And he shoots the ball into the hoop for the win!" as opposed to the internet version: "OMG this game is so cool! THIS GAME FTW!". You see the difference is that in the real life situation there is actually something to be won. Whereas the internet version is just some odd term that essentially means "I like this!" (to whatever the FTW was directed at).

The phrase is being used for pretty much the same meaning in both your examples.

Sorry about that, I was editing it as you typed your reply. Look up.

In the latter example, whatever the phrase is being directed at is winning at being cool, obviously.

And in addition, when I said the phrase "for the win" was used before its prevalence on the internet, I meant that in exactly the context used in your latter example.

Testing Area, plz. K? Thx.

Yeah, I used to ponder at the meaning of FTW...then I had an epiphany - use Google!

Now, I'm less confused with the stupid people that use this (including yours truly)...

Hasn't this been talked about before recently?

hrth

"hrth" is a term that means everything and nothing at the same time. One could use this term as a game of sorts, where a few people would act as though they completely understood each other while using this term, to intentionally confuse people.

Person 1: Man, that was hrth
Person 2: I agree whole-heartedly
Victim: Umm, "hrth"?
Person 1 + Person 2: What, you don't know what hrth is?
(drags on)
