Unless you got some new firmware the others haven't, I don't think we really need another review.

    got mine too [IMG]

a problem i discovered is that 2megabit (256kilobyte) saves are always padded to 512 kilobytes. (but the other ones are fine, ie. 512kilobit is 64 kilobytes)

also i've discovered 1 (scrabble) or possibly 2 (need to double check) games that didnt get savetype detected properly.

You actually bought it right [IMG]? You didn't selfishly take a free "sample" and set up some crap website?

EDIT: Nothing against the original reviewers, just there are more and more coming up when all you need is 3-5 opinions max

well i know what you're saying, i know of a certain other website...

me and sasuke are actually mods at bamboo, we help them out a fair bit and we also fixed up a part of the english on acekard website (after they had already posted their own dodgy one. but the current one is modified by them again to change what details they wanted changed, so it's still not perfect) and they gave us the acekards.

i don't think we are exactly obliged to make a review... maybe i misunderstood, but if sasukes doing one i will probably collaborate with him.

The more reviews the better! That way we can see many opinions and decide better if the cart's worth buying.

Well if that's that case, I guess they are actually obliged to give you the cards as a form of reward.

Not really. You just need to tell them you have a valid site and the required whois information.

Yeah, I think so too. It'd be very strange if they'd just send you a review sample though they don't even know whether you have a site with some reviews on it.

You know, I could fill my site with reviews but I simply don't think it'd be worth my time or help any of the manufacturers either, as their main market does not have my interests in mind.

It comes down to, basically I asked too late (the response was that all samples had been sent already) and, after looking into it it's far too expensive for me to bother to import one from an overseas site like bamboo ($86CAD and change using the slowest shipping they have) for the explicit purpose of wanting to fiddle with their source and possibly improve their product. This was the main point I tried to get across in my response to costello (with the distinct point "it isn't about FREE, its about ACCESSIBLE", which may have been outright ignored by the MC) for the podcast, though all I heard was "cory1492... free... free... free.." and thought, next time I'm asked it's going to be "no comment".

IMHO, getting developers onboard for the open source aspect to be a selling point (meaning developers would have to be able to get the thing in a reasonable manner/cost - right now I can get another R4 + 1G TF card for around half the price), if they take it to the fullest, is important both from marketing and getting community improvements (and also, in my opinion more important than frivolous reviews, IF they decide to go full bore in that direction). I mean, why would anyone write improvements for acekard only, if they don't have it, can't afford it or can't get it, especially when the only ones who'd benefit are others who already own the unit? It makes it a simple choice, spend your time coding for everyone, or spend your money and time to do coding for a single specific product.

I for one had been hoping for an opportunity to work on something that doesn't begin as tedious reversing of functions omitted from the source release, of a current source (which has not been done before, not that I am aware of at any rate), where releasing the results publicly would not damage the manufacturer's intent. The way things seem to stand the samples were sent out mainly as a marketing gimmick to get some of the more informed people talking about it everywhere they go (those that knew samples were available because they weren't busy with their heads stuck in PSP code [IMG] ). Though, I do now know of a couple excellent community aware coders who are looking at taking up the O.S. aspect, and have likely received samples or were in a better position to pre-order.

When I spend my time doing something, I want to be the main person who benefits from whatever I'm doing. Therefore coding for the Acekard is justified in my mind once I get the unit.

oh, shame you didn't get one cory1492, i always appreciate your great work [IMG]

heres some things that maybe other people haven't mentioned much.

    physical build:
at first glance the cart looks like a great build, but it's actually too thick in the DS slot, the first time i put it in it actually got a little stuck (although mine could be an exception...)
usb slot? great, but it's near (if not) impossible connect to it while the AK is still in the DS.
microsd slot? great, spring loaded. but its a little difficult to get out still.

    function:
games load fairly fast (Woot) and work fast and great from nand, only tested one game on microsd (Kingston 1gb japan) and it worked perfect, but i'll test whether castlevania works perfect on it later.
homebrew loads fairly fast too, and the autopatching has worked perfectly so far.

autosave detection is pretty damn good, but not perfect.

gui: the gui is exceedingly fast (yay!) and very nicely designed. but in entering a very large folder of games (850mbytes) it takes almost 2 secs, not surprising, same with other carts i've tried.
swapping from reading nand to microsd is instantaneous [IMG]

it find it satisfying how they mapped the stat button to the windows like start menu, and how customisable the gui apparantly is (i havent tested).

I also bought my RPG from Bamboo the day after it started shipping (I was one of the last to buy from their first batch).

Since I live in the USA, it will probably get to my house sometime next week.
