<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>INTRODUCTION</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

Hi, this is my quick review of the R4i Gold from r4ids.cn.
The R4i Gold team has always kept this cart updated, with new kernel every month (on average)
But since YWG (Yellow Wood Goblin) decided to support the r4idsn, his brother (the R4i Gold) also gets YWG blessings, making this R4i Gold a very good option.
This is now my secondary flash cart, because it’s a DSi cart with WOOD, SDHC, and near perfect compatibility
For this review, I’ll be using:<ul><li>1x DSi XL</li><li>1x DS Lite</li><li>1x 4GB Kingston miceo SDHC class 4</li><li>1x R4i Gold v1.4</li></ul><!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>PACKAGING</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

The R4i Gold comes in a Gold box about the size of an iPod touch, and it includes:<ul><li>1x Wrist strap</li><li>1x Micro SD USB reader</li><li>1x Cartridge case </li><li>1X R4i Gold v1.4</li></ul><img src="http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af43/RoM-ee/PIC_0117.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>BUILD</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

The cart itself is very good, it’s a little thicker than a commercial cartridge.
Weighs the same as a commercial cart…except for the 2 groves on the side, it’s almost exactly like a commercial cartridge. Only issue I found is, it get a little stuck about half way in and out, right where the groves are at, and pulling it out does required a good grip of the cart, tried it in both the DSi XL and DS lite and same result. Doesn’t bother me too much after using my DSTWO on a daily basis

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>SOFTWARE</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

The R4i Gold team is over hauling the GUI to work with Wood, but as of this writing it is not available, so I will concentrate specifically on the R4i Gold’s Wood firmware (1.18 to be exact) and how well it works on R4i Gold's hardware
The R4i Gold can be updated to work on Nintendo's v1.4.1 firmware.
you can download the update file <a href="http://filetrip.net/f12925-R4ids-gold-V1-4-1-upgrading-progame-1-0.html" target="_blank">here</a>

Here's a sneek peek at their new GUI
these are shots of the video player, I will have more info on it when I get my hands on their new kernel
<img src="http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af43/RoM-ee/Catch5.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> <img src="http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af43/RoM-ee/Catch4.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

R4i Gold’s Wood firmware is different from R4idsn, meaning the R4idsn’s Wood firmware will not work on the R4i Gold..I’m not going to go into details about YWG Wood firmware because most of you already know what it is, instead I’m going to test how well some of the features works on the R4i Gold. I am a little disappointed that Wood for R4i Gold will be a day late. That's because YWG updates the r4idsn, then he leaves it's to the R4i Gold team to port it to the R4i Gold, so Wood for R4i Gold will be a day late

If you would like an in depth look at Wood R4, TK_Saturn made a really good guide on Wood R4, and every features in this guide is the same for R4i Gold
You can see that guide <a href="http://gbatemp.net/t227742-new-users-guide-to-setting-up-wood-r4" target="_blank">here</a>

The Icon used is Alex Rider Stormbreaker
Wood loads ups pretty fast to it’s default skin, Zelda..I’ve always prefered a clean and simple GUI so it’s looks real good
You can add skins if you want something different, any Acekard skin will work.
For you GBATemp fanatics, there is an exclusive GBATemp skins that comes with Wood

<img src="http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af43/RoM-ee/PIC_0151.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

New feature for Wood v1.18 is a new save option, you can keep the .nds.sav extension or you can change it to .sav. I changed all my saves to .sav because I have a lot of different flash carts and this new .sav option will make it easier for me to move games and saves between carts.

So far every feature of Wood works just like it did on the “original” R4. cheats works great as usual,
Favorites is a feature that should be in every flash cart.
For media, I used moonshell 2.10 stable, and as expected, it works great. Moonshell is in my favorite folder for easy access. I wasn’t able to find a working .nds file for soft reset, (exit to firmware) The R4i Gold team said they're working on it. So I will update when it's available.

<!--sizeo:4--><span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>FINAL THOUGHT</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
I understand the criticism when it comes to R4i carts, but the R4i Gold team has always been pretty active with their updates, it goes unnoticed by the community because of the R4i badge, and now with YWG’s Wood firmware, this has become a great cart to own. You get all the benefits of WOOD and added a few extras like SDHC and DSi compatibility. I highly recommend this cart to anyone looking for a good flash cart kit at a low price.

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Wood R4i Gold will only work on the R4i Gold from r4ids.cn, it will<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> <b>not work</b> <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->on any other R4i Gold.<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->

This video player the R4iDSN team is developing is independant from Moonshell?

I'm still unsure if I should get Gold or DSN.

DSN - cheaper, already pre-flashed to 1.4.1, faster Wood updates
Gold - available at Shoptemp, extra Goddies (Cartridge protector et cet).

Since Wood 1.18 is the last Wood version YWG will work with Normatt and shell out Akaio together and then the R4i Gold will be compatible with Akaio
