I recently picked up a used Xbox console. I've never owned one before, so I'm not sure what to expect.

There are a bunch of wires sticking out of ventilation holes below the first controller port. What are they for? Is it supposed to be like that? Picture attached.

Seems to be a modchip.
I'd say disassemble the top and take a peek inside, you can recognize a modchip as it's a small board sitting a bit elevated from the mainboard underneath the DVD drive.

Looks like DVD drive power cables and no there not suppose to be like that. Take it apart and see what's up

DVD drive cables are in the back of the console, they can't reach the front.
Not to mention, afaik, the DVD drive power cable was yellow.

The old Xbox is easy to open. Just open it and tuck the cables back in if everything works as it should.

I got an xbox with similar wiring coming out of a vent in theat corner to a switch glued to the side, and an LED light on it. Haven't turned it on yet, but I assume it's a modchip.

Yeah, I suspected that it was a modchip. Here's a picture of the board it was connected to. There's no obvious markings on it, so I can't tell for sure what it is, though. The other side of the board just has "edge of the case" written on it.

Seems to be an Xecuter clone.

I'd leave it in for the time being.
Download Slayers CD and upgrade to a bigger internal HDD.
From there you can install UnleashX and lock the HDD, then optionally remove the chip if needed.
Or you could leave it in.
it has no impact on the system other then being able to boot from DVD without initializing the HDD.

Sorry, I'm new to the Xbox modding scene. Will this allow me to install homebrew or transfer Xbox backups over FTP? I originally planned to softmod it using Splinter Cell and a USB adapter.

I highly recommend installing a bigger HDD in it (if it still has the original 8GB drive) and running Slayers CD on it.
With Slayers CD, you can copy a fresh C drive to it and install Unleash X on it.
This will save you the trouble of exploiting it with a hacked savegame.

After that's done, you'll be ready to go.

You mean doing it with Chimp, like you suggested in this thread?

EDIT: Never mind, I found a guide to everything on Slayer's CD.

No, the chip allows installation of bigger HDD's without chimp ;p
Can yopu recommend me a good lockable harddrive I can buy? I have two modded xboxes with their original 8GB drives. One is soft-modded, the other is chipped.

Kingwin SATA to IDE adapter and any 3.5inch SATA drive (2TB or less)
Otherwise, any good IDE drive will tho, basically non-lockable harddrives are really hard to find.
