Please keep in mind this as a way of knowing what NOT to do. If you seemed to have gotten a brick, first try taking out the SD card (seems to be a menuhax error, intended to happen) and booting into recovery mode. If you bricked your console, please report it here!

If you are getting "an error has occurred" after "successfully" downgrading, and you used HomeMenuHax as your entry point, try the following:
REMOVE payload files from SD card root. BACKUP and REMOVE homemenu extdata (/Nintendo 3DS/<a bunch of numbers and letters>/<a bunch of numbers and letters>/extdata/00000000/0000008f). Insert SD card back into 3DS. Hold L+R+UP+A before powering on, power on, and continue to hold the buttons.

TO PREVENT A BRICK:
  1. Do not shut down your 3DS on "Getting CIA Information"
  2. JAPAN N3DS ONLY: Delete the file 000400102002CA00.cia from your update folder.
  3. Have some battery on your 3DS and leave it plugged in.
  4. Wait a while for SysUpdater to do it's thing.
  5. Delete the Tubehax DNS before doing anything, as you won't be able to update from recovery if anything happens.
LIST OF BRICKS:
@Harvest God: Shut down his 3DS on "Getting CIA Information".
@Mai Heroes: N3DS. Installed CIA files for O3DS on an N3DS.
@VanFinale: Had a Japan N3DS and didn't delete 000400102002CA00.cia.
@sampson: cause is unknown, apparently a crash occured.
@Ryuzaki_MrL: Shut down his 3DS on "Getting CIA Information". (Not a proper brick, he can't use recovery mode and eShop and System Settings are gone.)
@theholycabbage: 2DS. A CIA install failed. Cause is unknown.
@BlindEdict: N3DS. Installed CIA files for O3DS on an N3DS.
@bjt: EU 10.3 N3DS, menuhax 2.1. Shut down his 3DS after staying on the "Rebooting" SysUpdater screen for 10+ minutes.

@Evoker: Hard-shutdown his 3DS after "Installation Complete, rebooting in 10 seconds..." This shouldn't happen, so it's likely a crash happened. Managed to get into recovery, and changed his primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and secondary to 8.8.4.4, which downloaded 10.3.

@MassExplosion213: No info given.

LIST OF SEMI-BRICKS:

@Evoker: Hard-shutdown his 3DS after "Installation Complete, rebooting in 10 seconds..." This shouldn't happen, so it's likely a crash happened. Managed to get into recovery, and changed his primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and secondary to 8.8.4.4, which downloaded 10.3.

@Hihomaster: O3DS. Managed to boot into recovery and update to 10.3.

LIST OF SUCCESFUL, YET WEIRD DOWNGRADES:

@Minnow: Downgraded with 9.2 CIAs, but he ended up with a 9.1 system.
@Theswweet: 10.3 O3DS. Downgraded with 9.2 CIAs, but he ended up with a 9.0 system.

Damn, how careless can you get. :wtf:

What would really be careless is if I do it a second time. Gonna send this n3ds back to amazon as defective and pick up a new N3ds tomorrow.

EDIT: Got a replacement 3ds, same exact one I bricked previously: American N3ds from the Happy Home bundle. Went through the tutorial again with the CORRECT CIA files and successfully downgraded to 9.2, all is well.

Always read the instructions and triple check your information.

It'd be really, really nice if we had some more info from brickers other than 'IT BRICKED WHAT DO'.
On that note, I think it'd be worthwhile to have a sticky with some pointers.
There's a massive influx of low-effort downgrade "guides" made by people who haven't tried it yet and won't hesitate to say "NAHHH IT'S SAFE JUST DO IT LOL".
I've got a list of verified downgrade package checksums here:

Indeed, as you said, Japanese N3DS users should delete 000400102002CA00.cia from the update package before attempting anything.
It's also a very good idea to keep the charger plugged in before attempting the downgrade so it doesn't run out of power in the middle of the process.
It's ALSO a very good idea to wait a while before hard resetting if sysUpdater doesn't seem to be doing anything.
