No samus, no dark tone, but lots of collectibles and still a metroid-venia game.
Like some collectible files explaining about certain mysteries.
And cross with samus at some point which she save you from a super boss.

I really love metroid so I'd give almost anything a shot unless it gets just savage reviews from the press.
I skipped Other M just for that reason.

You do understand what metroid-vania means right? Sure, the genre's have (mostly) moved to 3D-land with some success, but it's mainly used in relation to the first games in their series from the 8-bit and 16-bit days, which this game is not.

I skipped Other M just for that reason.

I actually missed most of the Metroid games after Super, and I really enjoyed Other M. Not sure of when it really came out, but I know I played it years after it had come out already.
