yes ninjahax worked ... now i'm going to try install pasta and rxtools....

You should be fine since both use emunand and once setup you can do an ota update to 9.8

any suggestions on how i should go ahead next. shouldi install pasta first then setup rxtools or vice versa. can i have them running both from the same sd card? and will cias installed on one work on the other?

Rx is now pasta so I would just go ahead and install rx tools and emunand and wait for the merger update
