Hacking wil an update kill my Wii

OK, just burned Mario Olympics and thought I had better do an online update first, got me a bit worried when the warning screen said that if there are any unauthorised mods to my wii then the update could kill the wii...... Shoudl I be worried or not? I have an old chip that cant be updated at all (winja???)
