Hacking WiiMC update 1.2.4 ate my HD partition

Yikes, a bit of a bug here:

I was updating to the latest version of WiiMC (onto my fat32 HD, partition 1), it did so: downloaded then exited the program. then I went back in to WiiMC to check out the changes and I got a message that it couldn't find my usb:\Apps\WiiMC folder. Ok no big deal right?

Turns out my the whole partition got garbled very quickly... almost instantly.
Please have a look at the screenshot. I lost everything. about 270 gigs worth.

Anybody recognize some of the text that my files and folders were replaced with? Windows chckdisk said there was file system errors and insufficient disk space to recover lost data.
It left partition 2 untouched, yay.

I am on the latest d2x beta v9 (r47) I used the recommended base setup on the wiiflow wiki.
the latest Homebrew channel... priiloader... hmmm anything else?

If there's any more info I can provide to help with please let me know.

looks like the program is writing its settings file over the FAT of the partition. dont do anything else that writes to the partition. hopefully you still have the other copy of the FAT unharmed. get out your hex editor and read those blocks and see if you can find it. if so, you may be able to copy the good one over teh broken one.

I had the same thing happen to me, but it was one of the first wiimc updates to stop using IOS202 and start using ahbprot (so a long time ago), and IIRC correctly it was a libogc issue in WiiMC. The fact that it has returned is very scary for me, it really pissed me off when I lost all my data the last time.

I don't really understand what pune is suggesting above, when it happened to me I just reformatted and accepted the fact that I lot a shitload of data. Anyways, listen to pune, if anyone can help you it's him.

If it's similar to my issue I had almost a year ago that won't work. When I tried it nothing was recoverable cuz it was mostly all overwritten with junk data

The fat and fat 32 partition systems use 2 tables to store the location of a file. One is the fat table that basically contains the clusters that are used by files and folders.
The other one is the directory table that contains the names of the files, their length, their attributes and the location of their starting cluster in the fat table.
Since all file and folder names got corrupted, it looks like the directory table got overwritten with something else.
While it's still possible to find the location of every file and folder on the disk when the fat is undamaged, you don't have a reference to their name anymore, and you don't know their exact length either.
I think folders use their own directory table. I am unsure if they use their own fat table as well. (I doubt it.) It would mean that probably you could recover everything located in subfolders. (If you have an undamaged fat table.)

I knew well enough not to touch write to the disk, without really knowing what sort of work I'd have to do to restore the partition.
Giantpune, I know more Chinese than I do hex editing, I take it there Is two copies of the FAT in there somowhere?
The last and only time I've used a hex editor was in 1992 to get Captain Comic to have infinite lives, the instructions were simple and I had to change only 2 characters

It seems that I'd better cut my losses, besides, what did I lose but some custom game covers and time. I have my discs after all.

Funny, I have no reason to play media on the WiiMC nor the space on the disk, I'm just excited to see these apps develop.
I'm a fan of the scene and I wish I could be able contribute, but UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT B A START is all the code I know.

On that thought If any of you guys need some photoshop done I could contribute that.

do not copy the 'recovered' data to the hard drive that you are trying to recover data from.

I think he was just unlucky. Or its how he has his drive set up.
My 2.5tb Fat32 partition now finally works properly with WiiMC.

I updated wiimc on both of my wii's without any issues.

Maybe god just has it out for chin77...
