I've read many things on this but still can't make a decision. What speed should I set my Wiikey to? 3x, which is my current setting, creates less noise, but this isn't the natural Wii read speed. 6x might result in DREs because the speed is so fast. I read a thread on another forum that said 6x doesn't work with 1.9g?

I hear Nintendo might detect the chips by how fast the drive reads discs, so 6x is safer if this happens?

Thanks.

nintendo doesn't detect anything dude don't worry. They have until now never detected a modchip. The only thing they detected is if the disc is a dvd-r or proper dvd. Anyway, do whatever works for you, it really doesn't matter.

I've never ran the config disc so I assume it's 3x. working just fine. no lag or anything. That said, with 1.9g, I understand, it's stuck at 3x? Can't confirm it though since I've never used 6x if that's not stock.

I used cheap +r media at first, so I was forced to run my wii at 3x to avoid DRE's. Once I switched to verbatim -r media, I was able to run it at 6x with no problems.

re: wii not detecting modchips:

It's been confirmed multiple times that the Wii is detecting the disc as a dvd-r. It's not detecting the modchip. How do you think wiikey got around the new security? They wouldn't have been able to if the Wii was detecting modchips.

6x is stock. 3x is half that speed, obviously. So you may experience some lag with 3x but it's unlikely. Things should be quieter with 3x but that may not be true. Loading screens will take longer with 3x definitely.
Some people report that 1.9g sticks the drive at 3x. This hasn't been confirmed.
Some people say 3x will make your laser last longer. This could be true.

I was thinking, maybe Nintendo could build a loading timer. If the load happens too slowly (3x) the game gives an error message and fails to boot. Or maybe I'm just paranoid.

Why does 3x make the laser last longer when technically it is on for double the time?

Well, because even though it's on double the time it's not working as hard. When trying to get the game read faster it has to work more intensely.
