Hacking wiigator 0.2 or 0.3gamma

I tried using 0.3gamma to load a gamecube backup but it gives me a disk read error when it gets to the game's main menu. I was told that 0.3gamma is used only for wii backups, and that I need to get 0.2 instead. Is this accurate?

you need to install miospatcher and then use gamecube backup launcher 0.2

or you can press X while installing the MIOS Patcher to allow for loading via gamma

I did install cMIOS v8 with backup loader. after that I put in the gamecube backup disk and the disk can't be read. So then i installed 0.3gamma as a channel, went to it, rebooted with hooks, the disk was read, but it gives me an error about 1 second after the main menu comes up.

the download is just an unknown filetype. i tried renaming it boot.dol and launching via homebrew channel but it said its not a valid app. bad download link?
