Nintendo reveal all the secrets behind the ultra smooth WiiUChat. Or as Iwata likes to call it, "VIDEO PHONE"
how smooth the video quality is will amaze you, even talking over a bad connection will work smoothly, even if calling abroad.

    Iwata asks

    wii u chat

Why does Nintendo feel the need to brand everything like they created it?

Is using existing services that difficult?

I wonder if it will be possible to start a video call with 3 party services users as Skype or some other video conference service.

    :\

Too bad, it would be awesome as most online tools are adding video features.

Well let's be thankful for what we have and hope more come with updates.

Not that I want to burst Nintendo's bubble, but PS3's Video Chat has been around for a while now, plus you could hold a chat room for 5 additional users, total of 6 users in a room - how is this a "revolutionary invention" and why are people so excited for a feature the competition has supported for quite some time now?

because like you said, it was supported by the "competition" not nintendo, therefor some of us didn't have said feature, therefore it is cause for excitement. why are people always knocking something down because it already existed somewhere else?

Oh, that was not my intention - you're getting the wrong idea. My point was that this is somewhat treated like a new thing when for all intents and purposes, it is not.

The 360 also had a webcam chat with kinnect.

What it seems to be the interesting thing about this is the fact that the videos won't receive lag or delays, which is one of the biggest problem with chatting with webcams for most people. It also seems to have other features and regarding the amount of people... I don't find it interesting to talk to more than one person at a time on a console. <.<

Um, Nintendo, Sony's on the video phone. They want their "innovation" back.

Talking will go smoothly even when calling a broad? Count me in! :P

Anyway...can't really disagree with previous posters. Why is it that ever since skype became a possibility, pretty much any company who can produce a camera and a screen has to come up with their own way to do the same thing?
I'm a naive dreamer, but still...here's to hoping for interconsole (or even console-PC) videophones.

Yeah, but like I posted before, on this one it wont lag, even with my internet that I consider pretty good, I sometimes get lag while on videocalls because the other people live far away or their internet is crap. The fact that they say you won't get lag, no matter the internet quality or the place where the other person is, makes it seem pretty awesome to me, other than that, I don't care about the doodling stuff.

I read the article and no where does it say nintendo invented or innovated or were the first in any way to do video calling, like some of you suggested. also he called it TV phone not "Video Phone", I don't think there's anything wrong with nicknaming a product though I am extremely disappointed it doesn't just support skype like everything else.

Did any of you guys actually read the article? It doesn't say anything about how revolutionary or unique it is. Heck it doesn't even call it a "Video Phone" but rather a "TV Phone'.

I suggested that it's treated as an innovation, and to an extent, it is. It's not the first time I see info about it, the feature is heavily marketed so-far, at least online. First the chit-chat with Reggie, now a dedicated Iwata Asks, c'mon people.

So it can do something that people could for years. What an innovation, seriously nintendo needs to get the with times and not have new features that old.

Iwata acknowledges that it's not a new thing:
But he puts it as a important new approach
