Ok I got a wii 3.1 with custom firmware and the gamma backup launcher. It has no problem playing backups whatsoever. But occasionally I get a disc read error playing retail games. So I was wondering if my backup games were killing the laser or maybe the laser is just dirty? What do yall guys think?

My wii had an issue like this, it started with the backups not playing then my originals not playing. Now i just use a hard drive to play all my games

Any games in particular, like brawl? Sounds like a dirty lens.

yeah I was playing brawl when this started happening. I was thinking it was just a dirty lens though cause this was the only original that this has happened to so far. But If the drive is bad how much does it cost to replace it?

Nintendo has got an official disc lens cleaner you can buy for around $10.

This was a problem when brawl first came out because it was the first game that used dual layer discs.

This happened to me about 2 weeks ago. I thought my lens was dirty, so I used one of those Nintendo lens cleaning kit.

This should work for you, but if it doesnt...

It didn't work for me either. I opened up my wii's disc drive and found a crapload of dust inside it, not just on the lens. I had to pull it all out. (I already had no warranty though, before opening it up)

Hopefully the Nintendo lens cleaning kit works for you.
