A friends wii (virgin, never modded in any way, about 2-3 yrs old, running 4.3) stopped reading disks. Gave the generic can't read disk error. I told them to get a "dvd cleaner" and put that in the drive. They did, it didnt help, so I ordered a new dvd drive for them.

Last night I installed the new drive, put it back together, turned the wii on, and once again was given a cant read disk error (actual game, not a bootleg)

Is there anything else software or hardware wise I could change/try/test that might cause this?

My best bet if it doesn't work with both drives is that something on the mainboard is broken, most likely the drive connector or something like that. Or both drives are broken, but what are the odds.

Test it with the case apart and observe what is happening. Is it spinning up? Is the laser coming on? Is the laser moving back and forth correctly?

Was it working fine originally or did it have intermittent errors before not reading at all? Was it dropped or knocked over?
