Hacking Wii Hacking confusion!!!!

OK, I was thinking about getting a Wii sometime soon. Thing is, I wanna hack it up so I can play backups. I saw all these guides that kept saying different things, and I don't know where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I checked the whole newbie starting guide thing, read all the stickies, and I'm still lost. I don't know who to trust, who's using current information, etc.

or the sticky that says modify ANY wii. I think its pretty self explanatory, hence why it was stickied so ppl wouldnt make a thread asking how to softmod
