The movie player itself will be WiiMC, so no immediate performance upgrades, but if a different movie player is used, say the unreleased one from Sonic Solutions, there might be better perf. This is mostly a UI thing
I'm trying to replicate the official documentation of having a hidden channel forwarded to by Disc Channel
I just joined here because I am very intrigued by this. I would really like to see this little project come to fruition. What I'm envisioning is seeing the dvd icon on screen, and when putting a dvd in the slot, the other two disks dissappear and the dvd disc drops into the slot on the bottom of the screen. Just as if you were to put a wii or cube disk in. Then I would assume the DVD logo would cover the disc channel screen, and when selecting it, seamless loads into wiimc directly into DVD playback, not the menu. Is this what you are aiming for?

Absolutely! Only thing is the WiiMC part, not really working on a autoboot feature, that would be up to those devs.
This will likely be using the Wii Menu decomp, once that's finished.
Atm I'm working on game translations for the 'Cube but this might be a project I'll tackle once that's wrapped up, but there's still plenty good games that deserve a proper overseas release so this will be on the back burner for a bit longer

Fascinating. Will the DVD option be bootable at all? As in running the DVD from the disc menu? Anyways, I was Just seeing where you were at with it. A lot of niche projects like this get abandoned, So I was checking to see if this was still active. Hopefully you can get them games translated and jump start this project sooner rather than later. Cause while this is kindof meaningless, I love neat hidden stuff like this. Plus you can consider it a form of console preservation. Restoring the wii to it's original planned state.

I did enable the discs on the menu awhile ago, when I was just learning how to mod stuff, but anything else is mostly just a proof of concept right now
Before I start modding (and recompiling!) the code I'm waiting for the decomp to be finished. I'm pretty confident I can get this to work, just not without a decomp. I'll load it up in Ghidra and start making some notes tho for later

I went back and reviewed this whole thread. I'm impressed how far you have gotten with very little to go off of. I did see the decomp in progress. Is there a status bar on the progression of that? I remember the decomp process of N64 games taking quite a while. However, this if far more simplistic.

What I’m confused about is…I could have sworn this used to be a thing

I remember back when I was in middle school being able to play DVDs was what made me learn about homebrew, and I remember doing something that allowed me to play the DVDs right from the disc channel

Unless you’re saying something else and I’m just stupid

I want to say you were using burned DVDs with Wii games on them, as opposed to DVD movies

I was watching loony tune DVDs

I did eventually also did do something with manually swapping isos later on for burnt DVDs for games. But I 100% was watching legit DVDs with the disc channel

I recall something about the mod only working on specific revisions of systems but not much more :/

I think this might be what you're referring to:

I want to say it was indeed that! But it was also so long ago and childhood trauma hides memories

Buuut that does sound very familiar, although it doesn’t mention loading the DVDs from the normal channel?

I remember being able to load my burnt copy of rockband via the disc channel all with soft mods. So maybe that is related to why I could also play DVDs from there ?

Not a great mod whatever it was. I remember a copy of rockband country I think bricking my system ? All I know is after a retail copy of that was inserted it was a permanent black screen whenever the system turned on (just some extra info in case it helps)

Wait you are telling me that Nintendos removal of DVD support for later Wii revisions was software only?
I would love to get DVD support for my Wii!

The Disc Drive on older models can play DVDs, however, the drive is the single weakest component on the Wii Console, so it's highly advisable not to do so frequently.
External drive support is planned for my mod of the decomp but will not be first priority.

@Xdqwerty, Depends on what port you're playing. You will find one of them good, whereas others are shit.

Never played Impossible Mission, feels similar to Another World if you could call it that?

@SylverReZ, I played the ds version which had 3 game modes, one where everything sounds and looks like the original, one where the assets were remade, and one which is a mixture of the other 2
