Wii owners with Internet connection will be able to download demo versions of Wii games. The rumor existed for a long time but now it's official. Demos to be stored on Internal 512MB memory or external memory (SD card or USB hard drive). Nintendo will reveal soon which will be the first demos.

The site/article reads out in German, but thank the lord for free internet translation!

It roughly translates into this:

Rumors confirms revealed: Wii-demoes as a download Wii-owner with internet connection demo versions of Wii-games will be able to download themselves.

It gave is the supposition already more long, now it official: Next to Virtual-Console-games, Wii-fans with internet access will be able to download also demo versions of Wii-title. One can the demoes then either in the 512 MB of large Flashspeicher of the console or on a separately available SD-card store. Which demoes make the beginning, wants to announce Nintendo briefly.

Nintendo is obviously making good use of it's WiiConnect24 service

I don't see a source on that website or any info about this on Nintendo's Press site, so how is it official?

Hopefully it does end up being true though

If this is true, it makes me sad the Wii isn't able to use a hard drive.

512MB is just too little, when you have save games, virtual console games and now Wii demos that are probably going to be in the range of 100-400MB or bigger.

And I thought the 360's 20GB HDD was a joke!

The max SD size that the Wii accepts is 2 GB.

True, although, perhaps a year from now, there will be 4 or 5 GB SD cards.

There are already 8GB SD cards.
Aren't 4GB (except the dodgy 2GB+2GB combined together) SD cards actually SDHC? SDHC cards come in sizes of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB.

Nintendo has not announced whether or not the Wii actually supports SDHC cards, and I do believe no one has actually tested it yet.

Oh yeah, I didn't think about that. Unfortunatly I can't test it because my Wii's at a friends house right now. (My house is too small to play with it so I hardly keep it here)

Sweet, this is what I was hoping they would do with their service. Now to get some patches and downloadable content released for games now.

Do we have to pay for each demo we download? If so, forget that then.

No, there are quite a few non SDHC cards which are 4.0 gb. I have an A-Data one which I've been using in my phone and M3 for a while now. I haven't actually tried it out in the Wii, but I'm pretty sure that the Wii only supports FAT and not FAT32, so the 4gb cards won't work. I might be wrong on that though, I forget where I read it.
