For a while now my Wii has been unable to play retail and backup DVDs. The game channel either comes up with the "?" after the 2 disc icons have been spinning or goes to the black "an error has occured..." screen.

If I try to install from the DVD drive in CFG Loader, it starts to spin the retail disc but after a few minutes comes back with "Error (ret = -2)"

It is a hard (wiikey) and soft modded launch Wii that does everything else fine. It is currently running 4.2E but has only been updated through homebrew and not via Nintendo.

    Anyone got any ideas ?

Post a syscheck using the link in my sig. I kinda doubt it will provide any helpful info, but it's worth a shot.

Hi JoostinOnline, typically I don't have an SD card to hand and whilst Homebrew will let me run syscheck off a USB drive it doesn't appear to save the results to anything other than an SD card.

Anyway, it let me view the report ... no freezing when I ran SysCheck v2.1.0b13 and all the IOSes appeared to be either "Stub", "No Patches" or "Trucha bug"

Are your games from another region? 4.2/4.3 give no benefits, they only remove homebrew, brick region changed Korean Wii's, and block region free games for hardmods.

    Just re-mod with ModMii.

That's the answer to life, BTW.

I am tempted to but ... would that muck up anything that is currently on the Wii. eg I current use the 222 version of CFG Loader, will ModMii affect this ?

As your wii cannot play backup OR original discs it sounds like a faulty DVD drive. Cios's or even ios's would not stop a genuine Wii disc from running, it would ask you to update if anything, however a Wii should always see a genuine disc.

As for updating via modmii, if you want to follow the instructions, if you are on 4.2 Modmii will recommend you stay on the same (downgrading will bring you no benefits either - except a different version of bannerbomb if you need to rehack)

Just spotted that Kittymat ... told ModMii I had a "virgin" 4.2E Wii and it recommended I stayed on 4.2

Don't think it is a hardware problem as I know two other people who have the same problem with exactly the same firmware and hacks.

Wrong. The OP is trying to play discs from other regions. The Priiloader hacks cause instability, and 4.1 will re-enable region free.

To be fair - when I wrote the OP, my 4.2E PAL Wii was refusing to play a PAL retail game through the game channel.

Will it read any GC games (real or burned)?

Also, before messing with remodding it, did you consider trying a cleaner in case the lens had become dirty?

That's why I'm asking what game it is. If it's a dual layer, that means it's probably just the lens. It could still be the lens if it's a single layer, but he only has one playable game to go on. The OP will never be able to play out of region games without downgrading (which would work perfectly) or using Priiloader hacks (but those hacks are unstable), so I think the course of action is rather obvious.

The original post never said anything about other region games, so I dismissed 4.2 being of significance. At this point, all we know is that 1 PAL game won't play on a PAL Wii. The others not playing are explained because the OP updated to 4.2.
