yet another short rant to pile on the NES Mini

it sucks. limited in display setting and features like simple Turbo-Fire / Auto-Fire function. a controller thats too short. HDMI only and no Composite video so you can't plug it into a Car DVD player, or a CRT Tv, or video capture devices.

But what strikes me right away is the game selection. what bonehead at nintendo picked these games?. i realize the absolute essentials like Chip & Dale, Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, TMNT 2 & 3, and Microsoft/Rarewares Battletoads and RC Pro AM.... they can't get the licenses, yeah i get that. But no english River City Ransom?. unforgivable. Dragon Warrior series?, Bionic Commando?, Blaster Master?, Rad Racer?, NOPE!, better to load up a lot of crappy first gen NES games that are on those 99-in-1 Famiclones and everybodys played a million times.

SMB 1, 2, 3?... Why?, There are remakes with improved graphics on both GBA and Wii's "Super Mario All Stars".... all 3 SMB games plus Lost Levels on a Wii disc....

Startropics. and No ST 2: Zodas revenge.... pointless. what an oddball selection. wouldn't Earthbound Zero be more appropriate?. or at least add Final Fantasy 2.

Kirbys Adventure. same thing. no Kirby 2. pointless. for 3DS there is a fully 3D remake of Kirby 1. for Wii owners there is the excellent Kirbys Collection. Why?

Dr. Mario ...who cares?, where is Tetris?, Because Dr.Luigi, Dr.Mario Miracle Cure, and the dozens of other releases on 3DS and Wii U aren't good enough. Pointless addition.

Mega Man 2... but not the other 5 games in the series?. Pointless. i'm playing Mega Man Collection on 3DS right now. and why 2?, MM 3 is the definite version and has Charge Shot and Slide mechanics.

Metroid... why wouldn't i play Metroid Zero Mission?, or even the improved Famicom Disk System version of metroid with stereo sound and a save system?

Castlevania... same, FDS version exists. better sound and a save system. this is just pointless.

Final Fantasy... Remake exists with improved graphics. on multiple platforms.

Donkey Kong... missing the Pie Factory Level. its not like Nintendo doesn't have the good version, they released it on 3DS eShop as part of a promotion. and this is the problem, on an emulation machine you would load up MAME and play the origional Arcade version, as is was intended to be played. (also no DK 3. pointless.)

Double Dragon 2... aweful. pick the game thats unplayable because the controls are screwed up. Also, MAME....

Castlevania 2... the game so bad and poorly designed it was the topic of multiple AVGN episodes. better to play the Fixed version wouldn't it?

Ghosts & Goblins... naw, i would rather play this other game called "put your balls in a vice and squeeze until you hear a pop"... much less stressful and nerve grating than this impossible POS. .. (Also, MAME)

Super C.... this is actually a good addition, but 90% is just entering the Konami Code over and over again. some of those 99-in-1 Famicom Multicart with Super C on it where you can select any stage, start with any weapon, rapid fire. Even back in 1989 you had Game Genie. Cheats are pretty much a Necessity. its just beating your head against a wall without cheats or stage selection.

I don't know if I'm the only one that faces this issue as well, but latency is a huge problem. I've ranted about this several times on this website and I going to do it again.

I recently had to return an Xperia Play AND a PSP because latency was too much of a problem.

When it comes to emulation, latency is a problem that cannot be resolved. The only suggestions I ever see are to set your TV to game mode, or get inside configuration files and change the frame skip, etc.

It seems the only solution to latency now-a-days is to buy the original console...with an everdrive. I am not paying several hundred dollars for games.

Like half of your reasons are "Better graphics/remakes for other consoles"
Some people prefer original over remake for nostalgic reasons.

The real reason it sucks is because no one has one.

yeah i forgot Punch Out is unplayable because of a slight 4 second delay. its probably the LCD TVs that are causing the refresh rate and latency problems, but without any Composite, and only HDMI, theres not even any way to plug the damn thing into an old CRT.

Combine the raspberry with the mini's case and - great emulation station! (Double meaning, got it?)

hdmi only was to save money and space; by now nintendo expects everyone to have a hdmi compatible tv.

if im not mistaken, the controller is the same size as the original, just shorter wire.

some people prefer playing on the feel of an original for nostalgia.

they organized the games bymost popular. its all opinion mostly, but whicheer games sold the most are considered the best.

konami code is mostly in older games, just like the original.

super mario is their all time best seller, ofc hes gonna be there.

    dr.mario was fkin amazing.

"good version" dk wasnt the original, they only put in the classics for nes.

my point being, if you didnt like it, why did you buy it if all your needs can be satisfied by your wii or using an emulator?

never bought one. i played on a friends. most of my issues mentioned with the Original vs Remakes or FDS versions, was regarding Fixes and Additions, like the Pie Factory Level removed from Donkey Kong, or Metroid/Castlevania not having a save system when the Japanese versions did, or Punch Out without Mike Tyson, the point is why would you choose an inferior version of a game when if you are using Emulation you can pick the best version to play.

and HDMI only is a pretty HUGE deal breaker for a lot of people. all modern TVs have Composite video next to the HDMI ports, No old CRTs have HDMI. its severely limiting the scope at which you are able to use your device.

problem is, the inferior version is the original. you cant call it classic if its using something re-made.
i can understand maybe a few missing levels is a blow, but most games during that gen didnt save anyway, just passwords. and again, with things like ps4 or X1 using ONLY hdmi, this would actually be a smart move to save money.

some people never knew the struggle of having to play games with a pencil and paper on hand :rofl2:

    The NES mini classic.
Made for people to relive those nostalgic days only slightly simplified.

And then you got OP, who needs to complain about every little detail.
You know you could also not buy it?
Or get a Raspi and improve it?

Seriously tho, every point you make won't deter me to get one.
    Try and stop me.

Double Dragon II is unplayable because the attack you perform depended on the direction you were facing? The Arcade, Mega Drive and NES versions are all like that. My only gripe about the control is that the timing on doing the jumping knee attack is kinda strict.

One thing that would help with a few of your complaints... lol

It's all still being worked on but right now you can play a lot more games than the 30 that comes with it.

4 seconds??? Seriously? Only candy crush and most phone games (waiting simulators) are playable with such delay...
