I have been thinking about online replacing the virtual console part of Nintendo. The more and more I think I see how it could be really good for the switch. That is ... if it is executed correctly. Think if they just offer games to download but you can’t play them when your one the go it will defeat the purpose. I don’t think it is likely but this is Nintendo so you never know. If Nintendo decides really push online and thier game catalog. I think it will really give switch an extra kick in the years to come. We all know the switch can run wii games with optimization’s made. This could be it. Wii game son switch. I am trying to be optimistic here. But I really do believe is Nintendo actually does somthing right we may be really lucky.

I'm confused, why wouldn't you be able to play them on the go if they just give us a download service like in the past?

The problem I have with how they're replacing the VC, is the lack of games.

I was never really a fan of the VC due to what I thought was a relatively high price per game combined with their awful DRM (especially with the lack of cross buy).

I would have preferred it if Nintendo either went for something more like PS+/XBL in terms of games or expand their retro library to include at least the games they own the rights to across various platforms (it's not like they're selling them separately).

You keep the games as long as you keep paying the online service.

That's called renting, not actually keeping, and it's a bullshit business model. You should be able to keep the games regardless of paying for it or not. I'd rather hack my console and download ROMs. You can't
even keep the games if one decides to cancel. That's stupid.

Keeping implicates you can keep the games regardless. Paying to keep games is no different than renting.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if you need an internet connection at all times to even play the NES games. Hiccup-free emulation of local multiplayer online at 60 FPS isn't trivial, they may have "solved" it by basically running a 240p PSNow service, perhaps with some look-ahead like latest Retroarch. Also the laziest way to authenticate that you are still subscribed.

The one thing that makes the classic games unique "This time around" is that they said it will be possible to play it online, hoping they actually have good functional connections to do it a solid justice. Not even sure more games will come from other system until they either find some people demanding it or they feeling desperate. But I dunno, it all seem new to nintendo to have a paid sub service compared to sony or xbox which had been doing it for a decade.

As for the kind of games they will have on their classics list, is hard to say. Based on observation, it would most likely be limited to Nintendo owned games. They probably did plan on "Virtual console" services like past systems but then decided not to. Other companies like Sega, Namco, SNK, and Capcom, who ever are releasing compilation games already as well as that arcade archives by hamster corp on eshop. They all facilitate the same thing. So Nintendo may have thought it wasn't possible they would want to start virtual console service again. Konami may even have some compilation of castlevania, contra, gradius, Adventure island, bomberman and more for if they do compilations anniversary. Honestly there plenty of companies celebrating their anniversary recently and using it as excuses for compilation games. :ninja:

The fact it's only a rental service, and the fact you can't even keep the games, makes me just want to mod the console out of spite.
The facts that you probably got a phone in your pocket or even others handled that can run retro games flawlessly make me wonder why the hype for retro gaming on switch? That is really a strange behavior in my opinion.

Oh yeah, noting says fun more than playing retro games with shitty touchscreen controls where your fingers cover up 40% of the screen. Sorry, but real controllers are the only way to play old games, not stupid touch controllers. Sorry, but I play retro games one a big screen, with a real controller, and not on Android.

Whoever is paying again for the same games shame on you. Should have just carried over from paying for the games on Wii/WiiU/3ds. Games get released on so many consoles. I just want to buy the dang thing once and be done.

I understand this will never be a thing especially with potential development time and bug fixes for specific platforms. ALso $$$$

If your throat closes, putting oxygen in your mouth will not solve anything - as you will be introducing oxygen prior to the area of obstruction
