Yes, the back does indeed scratch hella quickly.
It's just like apple WANTS you to but a case + maybe screen protector...
As if they've got a deal with those people...
(which they probably have lol

I'm sure they can do better, but whatever...
I don't mind xD, I got my silicone case ^^

The aluminum gets scratched much worse. I remember when i first got my iPod touch a year ago, I could use the backside of it as a mirror (app)

Now it's completely unreflective because of all the scratches. And the funny thing is, I have no idea how it happens. I suppose just about anything can scratch aluminum though, even fine cloth.

^^ I agree completely.
I've had my new iPod 4g for, like, 1 week and the back side has many small, hair-width scratches. I stopped worrying about it though, as it would drive me crazy.
Shame I could not buy any protective case with it, but the shop where I was buying it did not have any.
It was crazy enough that I had to splash out 29 EUR for a charger to be able to charge it when I'm not at the PC. An exorbitant price if you ask me.
Anyway, I just hope that the screen DOES NOT get scratches too, as time goes by. It should not, if Apple's word is to be believed.

EDIT: How do you guys clean your screens?
I have no idea I'm just using soft paper tissues, first-time owner of an iPod.
I just don't want it to look like shit when I'm trying to trade it in for a newer model next year (although it is not yet sure if they will make a better version next year).

I avoid the problem by not having an iPhone.
Oh what a usefull post in the iDevices section.

OT:
I was planning on replacing the back of my iPhone4 (which will arrive in 19 days) with aluminum, but I guess that's not a good choice after all?

Both sides are made out of the same hardened glass aren't they? Maybe the back is getting more scratched because you place it down on tables on the back or something. Both my sides are pretty good. Fingerprints all over them though...
