Why do topics get locked instead of deleted?

First off, all these questions should go in Site discussions/suggestions if anything, but are probably best answered by PM'ing a mod or something.

Second off, deletion of topics is only used mainly for spambot ones like advertisements since they don't have any relevance to the forum. Other ones are just locked so they can still be kept on record. If a topic gets out of hand after 12 pages of discussion we're not gonna have 12 pages of discussion deleted, just locked.

But you can on the other hand request a deletion of a thread.

We usually do that to preserve proof of what a certain user did, especially if that warranted him a warn

It's for the OP and other people to see what happened to the topic. Users may start wondering where a topic went if it's suddenly gone.

It also allows us to reply with a reason for locking etc.

I should just add to what Raul and Tj said, only threads from spambots are actually deleted completely. Usually if a thread from a real person seems to vanish its because it has been set to invisible and unapproved.

Meaning that staff will be able to see the entire thread (whilst you members cannot - Easily reversible after a few clicks).
