I see people complaining about traffic cameras online fairly frequently, even the Mythbusters have done some episodes on how to avoid their gaze. I just don't get what the big deal about them is, they are only a problem if you're doing something boneheaded like speeding.

So you're mad you can't break the law without consequences?
Are you even a driver? It's been known for decades the cameras are just a money-making scheme for certain districts. Nobody should be getting fined for driving 1 or 2 mph over the limit. The minimum should be 5 mph but that would cut down their revenue too much.

Have you seen how bad most drivers are?

Yes. Especially when 4 cars pull up to a 4-WAY stop sign and CLEARLY don't know how to navigate it. I'd like to get a motorcycle but most if not all drivers DON['T GIVE A FLYING FUCK ABOUT MOTORCYCLISTS. One has to literally ride a motorcycle LIKE YOU ARE INVISIBLE TO ALL OTHER DRIVERS. and it's always the same goddamn excuse - some old lady - "But officer I didn't see him, blah blah blah!" Meanwhile your bike is in shambles and you've got a cherry burn (AKA ROAD RASH) bleeding down the length of your right thigh that hurts like hell. Additionally, because she made a left-hand turn from the middle lane and you went over the hood of her car, you've got some aches and pains that HOPEFULLY WON'T BE WITH YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

M7L7NK7, YOU NAILED IT.

Agreed. Another "plus" is that, well, at least here in Florida, any ticket you get submitted by a camera carries a NO-POINTS-ON-YOUR-LICENSE deal, so there is that. A cop has to be there as a witness. Strange but true...

That's interesting, I'm not sure I agree with that though. That makes it essentially legal for rich people to speed...

It's the 1-2 m/kph to fast bullshit for me.

I'd definitely want some margin, maybe like 10MPH or so? The calibration on the cameras are unlikely to be perfect and it's definitely not perfect on the cars.

They are straight up illegal in Texas, you can see some old ones around from before they got banned but they are disabled.

Motorcycle drivers are much better, they tend to speed at a higher percentage and do stupid stuff like split lanes (only legal in California) and tend to get all mad when you signal to get over a lane and then they floor it so they are in the way when you're ¾ into the lane. Everyone needs to learn how to drive today.

Because state surveillance is bullshit
It's because surveillance of the public is a bummer.

It shouldn't be saving anything unless you actually violate the speed limits though. At least that's how I'd make the system work, it would save money on bandwidth, power usage and storage costs.

Sorry for not replying to these sooner, I forget about this thread for a bit. .-.

Gimme a margin of 5 k/mph and I'm happy.

This is why.

The U.K. for example is filled with CCTVs to the brim, yet they still have 100k+ children go missing.

It sure sounds like something a non-driver would say.

AFAIK it's 10%+2 above the speed limit, so in a 30mph zone that would be 35mph.

That said, I think they would be better to at least put those electronic 'warning' signs before any speed camera with enough distance to allow for deceleration from a reasonable speed.

In my early 50's and have never once in my life seen one of those electronic signs showing your speed placed where a person didn't have ample time to slow down.

It's supposed to be about safety and the points on your licence already addresses that. So why the feck are they making money off it? It's not like any of it goes towards victims of traffic accidents caused by speeding.

Playing devil's advocate, the excuse will probably be something like because money hurts more than points and (they believe) more likely to have an impact. Arguably there is also a cost involved, although the fines go to central government AFAIK.

IIRC Finland actually scales their fines based on income, so the richer you are the larger the fine.

That said, depending on context and who you are dealing with, you may not always be fined and instead given a warning and/or the option of a speed awareness course.

A reasonable speed is the speed limit.
