A friend of mine is buying a Wii for Christmas and wants to play both GC and Wii dvd backups on it. I know that certain newer wiis can't play dvd backups, I wanted to know which wiis can and cannot play backups.

No new Wii can, not for 2 years.

All Wii's can play USB backups, although that doesn't cover GC games.

Yes, I know that, I was asking which wiis can play GC Dvd backups and wii dvd backups :P.

Also, another question, was there ever a USB loader for the Wii? (Besides WODE or others.)

I mean specifically, my friend wants to be sure about the wii he's buying. (I remember something about D3 chips not being able to play backups.)

And sorry, I meant GC usb loader.

    According to this site:

    http://www.wiidrives.com/list

any drive over LU72+ serial is likely to bear a D3-2 chipset. Those chipsets won't let you read DVD backups at hardware level. (they can USB..! but only for wii mode, as GC over USB isn't reliable and buggy)

edit: I own a LU64xxxxxxx wii, which has a D2E drive. (Compatible with Wii & GC DVD backups)

Also only white Wiis are able to read DVD-Rs, if the Wii is not white, the chance is 0%.

Id say the chance is close to 0% on any Wii made after autumn -09, regardless of color.
The odds of buying a new Wii, from a store, manufactured before that is highly unlikely.
