A class 10, for sure, there seems to be a lot of games that just need all the speed you can give them.
Also a good manufacturer like Kingston, Samsung maybe. I was huge proponent to say that a 64k allocation size format helps tremendously with load times too; which it does for me and some other people, but the few questions I got through it seems it does the opposite for other people; it seems those people had lesser manufacturer's card like pinyon or something like that, not a big brand one where you pay for quality parts.

THAT is just me making (good IMO) guesses about it but good brand class 10 with 64KiB allocation size seems to be fastest you can get, making some games being reportedly slow as SHIET not slow as shiet. Like Project Zero first had multiple reports of load times that took minutes but for me my load times are always just few seconds.

Lol, all this talking about what SD card is "best and fastest".
Remember that max speed and compatibilty is dependent of the hardware ( WiiU ) used with these cards.

People, do not be stupid and do not buy anything over class 10.

Short: The wiiu's SD slot speed maxes out at about 10Mb/sec.

In the article you mention they also say "SD cards, of which the Wii U supports up to 32 GB", but everyone here is using a 64GB/128GB card successfully. So possibly it's associated with the Wii firmware version and newer firmwares support both higher capacities and higher speeds.

Unless the card is used for other purposes as well where the transfer (write) speed comes in play (which is the case for me) ;-)
Other than that you're spot-on.

does pokken load really slow for any of you guys? I don't mind a long load time at the start of a game so much... but all of pokken's load times seem to be a minute long (start the game, start a stage, etc)

anyone else have this problem? I'm using a 64gb microsd from samsung rated at 40megs per second that I'd originally used on my 3ds but switched over.... maybe pokken loads sluggishly always? wonder if it has any language folders...

I'm facing a similar problem. I switched two SD cards Class 4, Kingston 16GB SDHC and Toshiba 4GB SDHC into a new micro SD Kingston SDXC 64gb Class 10, Uhs-1 and the loading latency is awfull now.
In Zelda TP HD the latency was "acceptable", now changing zone takes +40s, and opening a door in a Dungeon freezes the game more than 20seconds, before changing the SD the freez time was no more than 3 seconds.

I havent tried pokken with the new SD, i'll give a try and comment if i encounter loong loading times.
But I can tell that in the old SD the times were acceptable, no more than 20sec of loading.

Did anyone ever resolve the SM3DW loading times issue? Tried a 32kb cluster format and 64kb, it didnt seem to help at all.

If you have amazon prime you can get a 64 gb sandisk mirco sd card for 17$ (USD).
64 is still on the low side. Just Dance is 16GB, Yoshi is 10GB. i wonder how big Zelda U will be, that might be over 20GB on it's own. My plan is to buy a disc version from Amazon Prime, to save money, but play from SD, unless we have USB loading by then. I plan on getting 128GB card, but you get whatever you want.

Following your posts, I was quite confused on which SD Card to buy, so I went to Amazon and bought all SanDisk Ultra SD Cards from the SanDisk vendor (https://www.amazon.fr/Carte-Mémoire-SanDisk-jusquà-Classe/dp/B014IX0202).
The cards are the following :http://i.imgur.com/bfdsGDh.jpg
- SanDisk Ultra 40mb/s 8gb SDHC (SDSDUN-008G-G46 on Amazon, but received SDSDUNC-008G-FFP)
- SanDisk Ultra 80mb/s 16gb SDHC (SDSDUNC-016G-GN6IN on Amazon, but received SDSDUNC-016H-GZFIN)
- SanDisk Ultra 80mb/s 32gb SDHC (SDSDUNC-032G-GN6IN on Amazon, but received SDSDUNC-032G-GZFIN)
- SanDisk Ultra 80mb/s 64gb SDXC (SDSDUNC-064G-GN6IN on Amazon, but received SDSDUNC-064G-GZFIN)
- SanDisk Ultra 80mb/s 128gb SDXC (SDSDUNC-128G-GN6IN on Amazon, but received SDSDUNC-128G-GZFIN)
They are all manufactured in China.

The SD Card contained only Super Mario 3D World (Release : "Super Mario 3D World EUR Wii U Loadiine READY2PLAY") + loadiine_gx2 (release of 21 may 2016 - Loadiine-nightly-195aaab) and tested on a WiiU Europe 5.5.1 (model WUP101(03) - Black - 32gb).
Test 1 : FAT32 with 64k per cluster (mkfs.fat -F32 -s 128 -n WIIU -v /dev/sdX1) + no modification to the downloaded game :
Test 2 : FAT32 with 32k per cluster (mkfs.fat -F32 -s 64 -n WIIU -v /dev/sdX1) + no modification to the downloaded game :
Test 3 : FAT32 with 32k per cluster (mkfs.fat -F32 -s 64 -n WIIU -v /dev/sdX1) + deleting useless languages (rm -fr SDCARD/wiiu/games/Super\ Mario\ 3D\ World\ EUR\ \[ARDP01\]/content/LocalizedData/Eu{Ru,Pt,Nl,It,Es,De} && rm -fr SDCARD/wiiu/games/Super\ Mario\ 3D\ World\ EUR\ \[ARDP01\]/content/LuigiBros/msg/EUR_{au,cs,da,de,el,es,fi,it,nl,no,pl,tr,sv,ru,pt})

Loading time results are obtained from the moment we press the A button (loading game) until "Press button A" appears on screen.
Results are the following (Capacity : Test 1 - Test 2 - Test 3)
- 8gb : 1:09 - 1:07 - 1:06
- 16gb : 1:06 - 1:05 - 1:05
- 32gb : 1:06 - 1:05 - 1:05
- 64gb : 1:03 - 1:05 - 1:05
- 128gb : 1:04 - 1:04 - 1:04

Results could change if the Wii U, after hard reset, was used to something else before running the game, this makes loading time increase by ~1-8 seconds (observed with 16gb, 32gb, 64gb and 128gb SD Cards).

Note that the Test 3 was performed twice :
- by removing files from mentionned folders
- by formatting the SD Card and copying everything inside except the useless language files (difference of ~1sec for the total loading time)

Thank you,
izon

Confirms what I said.
Do not buy over class 10 (u1)
Anything higher has no use, The wiiu's sd slot does not have the physical contacts to even support uhs 3 cards.
SDHC Class 10 or SDXC Class 10 u1 is the best you can buy ( 80mb/sec )

If we have kernel access, why can't we load games from USB like the Wii, instead of the SD card..? And will emuNAND be possible from SD in the future?

Can anyone tell me if 32k cluster or 64k cluster is best? Ive tried 32k and load times for some games are slow. I wonder if 64k cluster will really make any difference? Thanks
