So torrents are tiring me out and I want to try out newsgroups.

Earthlink gives me a paltry 5GB a month and has crappy retention from what I hear.

I was referred by someone I know to usenetserver.comusenetserver.com. He says it maxes out his connection consistently. We live in Florida, USA btw.

It's $15 a month. Any other recommendations? Anything cheaper?

Also, what is the best newsreader out there too? My friend recommended newsbin pro, but I don't feel like spending $40 on it.

There are many threads about usenet around, http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=48296 being one of the more active.

I use giganews (maxes my connection out in Europe when I connect to the US server). A tad on the expensive side ($25 US/month), reliability and binary retention is great though.

As for reader I keep it simple and go with grabit and yenc power poster for reading and posting respectively.
    Grabit:

Yenc power poster, I use a modded version:
    http://powerpost.cjb.net/

7zip should do for file splitting (the general consensus seems to be rar files are good but hey, 7zip is supported but just about everything):
    http://www.7-zip.org/

The new grabit supposedly supports PAR(2) files as well but I have not upgraded yet so quickpar it is when it comes to repairing damage or file checking (SFV files, also supported) are slightly quicker though for checking):

I've used Giganews before but I've been with www.newshosting.com for years now. Rarely ever had a problem. One thing I noticed is during the day my d/l speeds are around 250-800kb while at night I get up to 2.5megs. I don't know if it's their server or my area internet. Either way, nothing to complain about.

I'm surprised there hasn't been any new developments with PAR files. It's been a while. I do remember with PAR1 first came out, was a life saver.

And personally I use Forte Agent (GrabIt doesn't save headers to your machine) and NZB-O-Matic for NZBs obviously.

I have hundreds of megs of headers from grabit (I only read 7 groups) As for par files it does seem to be the way forward, aside from usenet and various anime groups I have not seen any use of it though.

Your best choices are Giganews, Newsdemon, Newshosting, and Usenetserver.
