I may be mistaken, but I think the major obstacle here is the Intel HD Graphics.

Mupen64 really ought to give more intelligible error messages when it crashes.
Could be, but I would think even Celeron graphics could run N64 fine. I did back in the 90's with a worse system.
But I used the Corn64 emulator.

So I tried using it and it worked like shit, and it doesnt even let me add more plugins
UltraHLE is a good N64 emulator with many plugin choices you could try. I had decent luck using RICE plugin back in the day on my Pentium 4.

Do you mean it was slow, or the games didn't work well, or what..?
All of those, plus with the jabo plugins games didnt work at all

It says pretty clearly on that page that it's supposed to use plugins. What plugins did you try to add? How did you try to add them?
I tried to add rice and glide64 final

There any particular reason why you're using deprecated plugins? GLideN64 is the successor to both of those.
GlideN64 doesnt work on my pc

So I tried with the ares emulator and when booting an n64 game it only shows some glitchy screen
You may need to use another core. Ares is like Retroarch; it's just a front-end for already existing cores. It defaults to the ParaLLEl-RDP Vulkan renderer for video, and I kinda doubt your system is capable of using Vulkan.

Ares only has opengl and direct3d and yet neither works

it's really not. ares is the continuation of higan, you can't just use another core. every emulator in it is custom to it and you cant just load external ones like in retroarch. you might be thinking of bizhawk which allows loading retroarch cores

but ares uses parellel rdp, if you cant run project 64 then forget about ares

note bizhawk also has an ares core, but parallel rdp is not compatible with the way bizhawk works, so bizhawk ares core uses angrylion (which is even more demanding)

Yeah, fair enough. I more so just meant in the respect of it using cores, rather than it doing the emulating itself. I figured you could switch between the three it uses.

I wanted to like ares, but the texture quality looks awful even on the highest resolution setting. compared to other emulators, like for example in majoras mask, the text in dialog boxes and the labels on buttons usually look pretty clean. but on ares everything is super pixelated

simple64 the games look fine, but I dont like the ui. why is the title bar always white and why can't I remove the status bar?

parallel-n64 I dont like because you need to have the whole retroarch installed alongside it, and mupen I would rather not because, ew plugins

bizhawk has pretty bad texture issues you notice right away when loading your save file (on the dawn of the first day screen, and the sun in the sky right before you gain control), if you use angrylion then you dont have those graphical glitches, but you also cant play the game properly unless you're using a supercomputer. ares core is equally unplayable

so in the end, n64 vc through dolphin is the nicest way to play n64 on pc... which is sad

Probably because it uses Qt6 for the GUI. You can at least fix the title bar color with Kvantum if you're on Linux.

nor dolphin
Have you tried Ishiiruka? It's a fork of Dolphin that aims for compatibility with older/lower-ended systems by sacrificing accuracy. The original dev hasn't touched it in a while, but it looks like the Slippi team may have forked it.
